Rod Sidley Architects

Rod is fantastic. He was the architect on the full remodel of our 1920s bungalow just before we bought it and he treats the house as if it is his own, which we fully appreciate.  He is always responsive, professional, and extremely talented. We're grateful to have a Sidley house.

The drain line is basically embedded in a concrete, covered by tile, floor in the bathroom.  One solution was to tear open the bathroom floor.  At this point we were probably looking at a major remodel of our bathroom.  Rather than go down that path, Rod suggested an alternative.  That was to run a new drain line.  This would involve finding some creative ways to run a new drain line within our existing structures  It seemed feasible.  At that point Rod brought in a plumber and between the two of them they were able to figure out a way to run a new drain line.  While the plumber was working Rod came by to continue to coordinate with him.  After the plumber was done we had several significant holes in our drywall (areas cut out for the plumber to have access).  At that point Rod lined up a drywall finisher.  The plumber and the drywall company did a great job.  Not only did Rod: 1) enable us to avoid a major redo of our bathroom, 2) come up with a creative workable alternative solution to our problem, and 3) he had a network of craftsman (plumber and drywall) who he has worked with and they did great work at a reasonable price.  It was really nice not to "start from scratch" to find and check out a plumber and drywall company.

We are very glad we brought Rod in right at the start to help us through this problem.

Rod had very creative ideas that we would not have considered. However, he took a long time to complete the plans with an unrealistic estimate of their cost when we contacted a contractor. He was not helpful in finding a builder for the estimate and was very reluctant to work with other builders. Our relationship with him deteriorated over time.

He was really committed to no only doing the plans, but to overseeing the construction and making modifications so that we were pleased with the final outcome. He also went with us to pick out fixtures and tiles, so he was involved every step of the way. He has a high commitment for aesthetic design. Especially for older home, he has a good feel for architecture that enhances the overall feel and value of the home. I cannot remember the exact amount of his fee as it was a percentage of the cost of the addition.
