The truck, a 16' Ford Econoline box truck, was good. It drove relatively well considering that it's a pretty big truck. It was clean, everything worked as expected. It might be nice if there were more ways to tie things down than the wooden rails on each side of the truck, maybe something like boating cleats. It'd nice if the overhead light in the truck had a switch/timer-reset inside the cargo area.
Making the reservation on their web site was easy enough.
The and quot;Dand quot; grades for punctuality and professionalism are a reflection of their reservations system and back end operations, at least in central NJ where I was for the truck pickup. The folks at the retail locations at pick up (a contractor) and drop off (a Penske regional hub) were very professional and fine to deal with.
Things were going OK, I reserved my truck a week in advance, far more time than they refer to on their site to avoid problems with having the truck of the size and at the pickup location that you want.
I get a call a couple of days out asking if I'd take a much larger truck (at a discount) than the one I wanted because they don't have the 16' one at the location near me. I tell them definitely NOT, I have space needs and cannot use such a ginormous truck--the 16' is just right to fit my parking vs. hauling capacity tradeoff requirements. Fine, they said I'll have the truck I want where I want it as I specified originally in my reservation.
Then the day before pickup, I get a call *telling* me (not asking me if I'd accept) that the 16' truck is waiting for me at some other, distant, urban location. Huh? What happened? I'm in the middle of a time constrained house cleanup and move out, and they tell me at the last minute that I need to add an hour of driving just to pick up the truck, and on top of that, rather than a nearby rural/suburban area where pickup of a large, unfamiliar vehicle should be simple, I end up having to go to a distant city center with unfamiliar, narrow roads, low bridges with possible clearancde issues, etc.?
Being in no position to reject it, get a truck elsewhere, etc., I ask what they'll do for my inconvenience. At least they gave me a decent discount for my trouble rather than telling me to take it or leave it (and maybe charging even me the reservation cancellation fee).
I would use Penske again if only because of the high quality of the truck, and their seemingly well-deserved reputation of having the newest, best maintained fleet with my truck being anecdotal evidence. Their main, regional location is reasonably close to my current location so I have more confidence in that location having the truck I want if I ever need such a truck in the future. But if you're not near one of their main retail and maintenance locations, be wary of truck availability issues.
