return a few times and complete what they said they were going to do
with my driveway and did not). Less than one year after completion, I
had one 7 foot crack and bad pitting over the entire driveway. Holmes
came out with his concrete vendor and they decided the deterioration
was caused by a specific stone used in the concrete mix, combined with
the hard winter. They decided the best thing to do would be to repair
some of the concrete. This is where my real issues began with this
company. Very poor and sloppy workmanship on the repair, and now they
refuse to reply to my emails or return my phone calls. When they do
return a couple of my calls, they tell me how busy they are and they
will get back with me. And of course they never do. The crew that worked
on my project originally told me that Holmes would back up his work and
take care of any issues I should have. Obviously this is not the case.
Someone else has photos posted with their review of this company. When I first saw the pictures
of their deteriorating driveway, I thought they were pictures of my deteriorating
driveway. Looking at some other recent reviews, this company might be
having some upper management issues. My suggestion would be to make sure
you get plenty of references.
Work performed on 6-9. Crew varied from congenial to sullen/profane, but I can overlook a lot when the work is done correctly. There had been concrete edging around the sidewalk, which had disappeared. (Work began at 7:30A; I arrived on-site 3 hours later.) Crew said they'd check on the edging's whereabouts. I did not hear about the edging's demise until several days later, after my email inquiry. I requested, and received, a $30 discount on the bill, to compensate for edging's loss. (20 ft. of edging @ $1.50/ft.)
It required another week, and my questioning email, before the sidewalk's wood supports, and soil backfill, was performed. As for enduring quality of the work, time will tell.
GENERAL NOTES on concrete work from ANY contractor:
This was a new experience for me, so I wasn't sure what to expect. IF you have concrete work done which abuts any vegetation, expect damage. I not only lost concrete edging, but also some plants. I wish I had been warned of this -- I could have removed edging and plants beforehand.
"It's been freezing temperatures and winter conditions from early December to the middle of April, [member name removed] was contacted, the drive was inspected and we did inform him that we would have the supplier come out and look at the drive. This just takes time. It has been a winter with multiple freeze thaw cycles and large amounts of salts and chemicals were spread this year, neither of which is good for new concrete. We always use a cure and seal on completion of our work but it still has its limits. The concrete supplier has agreed to supply the concrete and we will be replacing the three blocks of concrete. [member name removed] has been contacted with this information."
In June of 2013 I requested a quote for a new driveway and a replacement sidewalk. The driveway Quote came in on 6/18/2013. In late July, I called and asked Holmes to add a quote for a replacement patio in the back of the house. The patio Quote came on 7/30/2013. Their schedule is dependent on acceptable weather conditions and the existing Backlog. They generally don't promise a completion date because they don't know what the weather will be like in the future and they will not start a job until they feel confident that they can complete it within a reasonable period of time. They removed all large rocks and sidewalk. They added crushed rock as required. They leveled and compacted the base. They poured 98 yards of concrete in the driveway, sidewalk, and patio. The driveway was 5" thick and 11' wide. The patio was 4" thick and 14.5' by 21'.. They completed the job on 10/15/2013 where they filled along the edges of the concrete with topsoil. They used 70 yards of topsoil. The driveway was unavailable for only seven days while the concrete set up.
I had requested a Quote for the driveway to be done with 4" of asphalt. The Quote for 4" (2" and 2") of Asphalt was $20,500.00. I think concrete was cheaper.
Team is very punctual, sensitive to yard damage, and takes the time to make sure its done right.
They hauled all the concrete away and brought in topsoil to fix the damaged areas caused by machinery. This is a huge plus as I have had work done where I was left filling in ruts and grading dirt.
Hardworking team that has been doing this work for years. Note it was 90-100+ degree days
Project was completed in 3 days.
Only issue is response time to check on project status. Around the 2 month marker, I left several messages with the answering service to check on my anticipated start date. Once I got a call-back. Project was scheduled without any issues
