First let me preface my remarks by advising all who encounter this merchant to stay well clear of the place. I am a professional person and have had many occasions over the years of having shoes repaired, soles and heels replaced, polished, etc. I had previously used a shoe repair in the heart of Blue Ash, Ohio, but noticed this place, Hillman's, on my way home from work. I decided to give them a try. I took two pairs of expensive dress shoes in, one for soles and heels and the other to have a couple of salt stains treated/repaired. I dealt with the owner. He did not inform me of the cost at the time I dropped them off and, having been through this many times before with other shoe shops, I did not think to ask, guessing that the charges would come in at around fifty dollars or so. I got a call from Hillman's today informing me that the shoes were ready. I asked the price and they told me it was approximately $140.00, including tax. I told them I thought that was way too high and the fellow said I would need to speak with the owner when I came in to pick up the shoes. I attempted to do so, but the owner simply smirked and said "well that is how much it is, that's the going rate." I told him that I did not think so and that I would not have left the shoes there had I known they would try and charge that much. I also pointed out that they had failed to properly remove the salt stains and it looked as though they had just tried to cover them with some polish. He was completely unmoved and merely made up some excuse, trying to blame it on the shoes or perspiration inside the shoes, etc. He then remarked that they had "gotten a number of shoes in that day." That seemed strange, so I asked "so you do not repair them here," to which he replied, "no, I have a couple of old retired guys I send them out to." I then understood the source of the exhorbitant charges; it appeared to be the case that he was simply acting as a middle man when it came to the shoe repairs and was marking the price up enough to pay his contract workers and adding on a charge he could dip into for himself, basically soaking the customer. Since he had my shoes, I had no choice but to pay the bill. I immediately took them to the other shop I had dealt with in the past, the one that was a bit farther from my home. They looked at the repairs and informed me that they would have done the identical soles and heels for $41.50, and given me a 10% discount, rather than the $100.00 that Hillman's charged. On the salt stained shoes, they said that they routinely charge $12.95, instead of the $30.00 Hillman's charged. They also pointed out that it appeared that all Hillman's had done was simply try and cover the stains and that they could still see the stains coming through the polish. They said that had I brought them there originally, they would have sanded the leather in that area, restained the area, then polished the leather out. In other words, the so-called "repair" Hillman's had done was of no value whatsoever. Nonetheless, Hillman's owner was more than happy to not only charge me for it, but to overcharge me on top of that. The people at the other shop said that they were stunned at how much Hillman's had charged and that, in their view, I had been grossly overcharged. When I left that shop, I immediately phoned Hillman's and talked with the owner, the same rude and arrogant individual I'd spoken with when I picked up the shoes. I told him what the people at the other shop had told me and that I felt his charges were more than twice what they should have been. He simply said, "well other people seem to like them." I then ask him if he was saying that other people did not mind being ripped off and did he think he was justified in ripping people off just because he could. I told him that I was going to be sure and tell everyone about my experience with his shop and what he had done to me. He then just hung up. As I said above, stay clear of this place unless you have money to burn and don't care about whether the work is done correctly.
