In August/September 2019, as part of our house closing, Gary St Clair roofing was paid to re-roof our detached garage. It is now 10 months later, and there is no sign of Gary St Clair roofing at our house. Repeated phone calls have been deflected with excuses like “waiting for two days of good weather” or “it will be done as soon as possible”. After 10 months it makes me wonder if Gary St Clair roofing is capable of or interested in our job for which they have already been paid. If either of those is the case, I would like a refund so that we can find someone who is interested in the job and capable of getting it done in a reasonable amount of time. It looks like they took the money and ran.

I was initially disappointed that work didn't start until about 2 weeks after the estimated date. But then 2 hard-working guys showed up and within 4-5 hours completed all the work as promised, cutting no corners. I waited until the next major rainstorm before writing this report. All promised work meets my complete satisfaction. My bathroom ceiling no longer leaks, and all downspouts handled a very powerful rainstorm to perfection. The price of $990 seemed like a good bargain to me and my wife.

"Thanks so much {Member name removed}...it was a pleasure working for you! Im sorry the work took a little longer than expected, however, I believe there was a bad windstorm in between time with lots of emergencies. Look forward to serving you again! Nikki St Clair"

We had a written bid for $1700--once the work was started we were told we would have to pay another $2000 to complete.  The work is supposed to be guaranteed, but when we called them to come look at some cracks that have formed, they sent a fairly unpleasant man who was unable or unwilling to get on the roof to look at the chimney and said he would be back the next day with someone to examine it.  No show for 3 days and then he showed up in the driveway at 8:30 AM with 2 trucks--still no one from this company had examined the problem. we had already called someone else to fix the problem.  Given the last issue where the bid was less than half of the real cost, we were not willing to have this company start work on anything until a written report was produced.  The "estimator" said something about us telling him he shouldn't come back for a month--which is first incorrect and he clearly did not follow what he thought were the instructions since he showed up 3 days later.  We have had a significant amount of work done by this company, but things have gone downhill-beware.
Response from GARY ST CLAIR ROOFING INC
"Mr. [Member Name Removed]: I am very sorry that you had an unpleasant experience with my estimator. We have done many jobs for you over the years and I did not know there was a problem at all! The last job we completed was a new roof and gutters on your garage which totaled $2,358.00. That was on the written proposal/contract and that is what was invoiced and paid. You called afterwards having trouble with your main house chimney. My estimator needed assistance to access your roof since it is extremely high and steep. That is when he was informed that you had hired another company to perform the repairs. If there is a warranty stated on our contract, we will honor that! Not one time did you call me to discuss your concerns. We have not been in business for all these years by having unhappy customers like yourself. If there is anything I may do to rectify your concerns, feel free to contact me. Thank you, Nikki St Clair"

This project turned out to be a nightmare that keeps on giving (almost three months later).
In early May, when I asked about getting a work permit, I was told none was required by the Village of Mariemont.
When I learned that a work permit IS necessary, I was told Gary St Clair would get one.
When I returned from being out of the country for seven weeks, I discovered the permit had NOT been obtained by Gary St Clair, and I had been been cited by the Village of Mariemont for failure to obtain the permit and would be fined $160.
When I protested to Gary St Clair, I was assured they had paid for the  permit, their check had cleared, and the Village of Mariemont was to blame.
The Village denied that they had received payment.
I called Gary St Clair every day for more than a week to produce the allegedly cleared check, only to receive an answering machine message each time. No one replied.
To avoid further penalties from the Village, I paid the $160 fine myself.
Meanwhile I discovered that the $2,250 deposit I paid to Gary St Clair by VISA before work began in May, was charged to my VISA account a second time while I was out of the country. The second charge threw my VISA account into debit that resulted in penalty charges and interest. I immediately contacted VISA's fraud unit and had the second $2,250 charge reversed.
Gary St Clair said "so sorry, that happened once before because of our 'merchant' account'."
About ten days ago, Gary St Clair reimbursed me $140 for the work permit fine, but wrote the check to the wrong party. I had to write them yet another letter, remind them that the fine was $160, and return the check. Two days ago I received a $160 refund.
Day after tomorrow I'm summoned to Mariemont's Mayor's Court to face additional fines that resulted in part because of the Village's exasperation with St Clair's 90-day failure to obtain the original work permit (mid-May to mid-August).
The actual shingling was done by a crew of five(?) illegal(?) underfed, Mexicans(?) who did apparently competent work under the supervision of a Kentuckian(?) who sat in the cab of his pickup truck.
  Cleanup was so-so.
A gate was left damaged, which I repaired myself.
It took St Clair three months to mail me a warranty from the shingle manufacturer.
I have waited until now (Aug 26, 2013) to write this review when I could be certained that I was repeatedly lied to about payment of the work permit.
   Do not patronize this company.

They fixed the problem so we were happy with that. They did come out when they said they would. Their price was comparable to other companies.

I am happy with the work that was done on the house. The work was started and completed in a timely manner - the weather was good for the last two weeks, which matters for outside work.

There was no problem at all. You do have to call them a few times to get them to come out. They came on time and got the job done fairly quickly. There was no problem with their workmanship.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET A FIRM STARTING DATE. I WAS PUT OFF FOR 5 MONTHS. THEY DIDN''T SHOW TWICE AND DIDN''T RETURN MY PHONE CALLS IN A TIMELY WAY. EVERY TIME I CALLED, THEY SEEMED TO HAVE LOST MY FILE AND HAD TO ''GET BACK TO ME'' WHICH TOOK FOREVER IF NOT AT ALL. I LEARNED THAT I WAS PUT ON A WAITING LIST SINCE MY JOB WAS SMALL COMPARED TO SOME OF THE ROOFING JOBS THEY DO. I WISH THEY HAD TOLD ME THAT IN THE BEGINNING. COMMUNICATION WAS POOR. WORK WAS GOOD.

NOT AS CLEAN OF A JOB AS I EXPECTED. I THINK THEY COULD HAVE PAID A LITTLE MORE ATTENTION TO DETAIL ON THE PAINTING OF THE ROOF. HAD TO HAVE THEM COME BACK TO REPAIR SHODDY WORKMANSHIP ON DOWNSPOUT WORK.
