During this process I significantly grew the scope of the job and may have caused a delay once or twice, but it consistently felt as if I had to push Joe to complete the work in a timely manner. Additionally, his use of poor subs ended up causing him 1.5 days of labor for an issue that had already been resolved. This added significant time to the work and reduced my confidence in the work. Lastly, towards the end, Joe did try to pressure me saying that the work was complete when it was in fact not, even laying on the guilt trip of how he is losing money on the job. This was not very professional to me and annoyed me quite much. Ultimately, everything was completed and all the issues were resolved.
Personally, I think the scoped of the work was too large for Joe's business and thus leading to the issues described above. For small jobs, I think Joe is a great guy to go to, he will give you a good price and quality work; however, for larger jobs I would look towards a company that is more prepared for the work ahead.
Basement (Employee):
1.) visible gaps in crown molding and base boards where joining boards separated
2.) stair railing due to not being properly anchored to floor and/or stair supports
3.) stair treads due to squeaking (replaced with thicker/ stronger treads) and risers (visible wood cracking)
4.) patched drywall cracking in bath around built-in shower
5.) Tankless Gas Water Heater not vented properly (only found out after licensed plumber made inquiries into installation)
Hard Wood Flooring (sub-contracted):
1.) squeaky floors in all 3 bedrooms rooms and hallway - there is no way to repair unless the floor is completely redone which is cost prohibitive. The sub-contractor did not add additional screws to sub-floor nor did they use a tar sheet barrier between floor and product even after I questioned their prepping process while they were on site. To be fair, I did not inform the General Contractor of my reservations with his choice of sub-contractor at the time. FYI, we had the exact same product installed by JP Flooring on the first floor 10 years ago and we have yet to hear a single squeak.
2.) I repaired the chipped boards myself with prestained wood filler and the short cuts with tiny slices of leftover boards.
Tile (sub-contracted):
No issues with tile. Still as beautiful as it was the day installed.
Several weeks later I wrote again, asking what I should do with the stuff he left behind (plastic sheeting, tarps and spring poles to secure the sheeting). No answer. I tried again a couple of weeks later with the same result. Nearly two months after he was here, I still have a room full of his stuff and he's unwilling for whatever reason to simply tell me if he wants it or not. As I said, he did a fine job, but a contractor who refuses to communicate with his client is something I can do without.
"I have not received any emails from this customer as of today, 3-28-12. The member did respond to me in a email regarding the price, by the time I was able to respond I already received his payment. I will contact the customer by phone in the AM of 3-29-12. I quoted the project up front and the member agreed to the price?"
