we called Popil Roofing Company (PRC) of Brunswick OH for a consultation. The owner, Ed Popil, came out the next day, a Wednesday, and gave us a reasonable price quote. Ed and his crew returned that Saturday morning and had the new roof on by early afternoon. The gutter replacement was scheduled for the following Saturday. Ed's team did a great job installing, removing the debris and cleaning up the work site. Their friendly and professional manner was matched by the excellence of their workmanship. The new roof and gutters look great and are ready for the first of many brutal Ohio winters. We highly recommend Ed Popil and his Popil Roofing Company (RPC).
"im glad i was able to add my advice to the situation with the racoons tearing apart the rubber deck that was on your house with a little investigation we found out the racoons put many holes in the roof we were able to redo the deck before any damage was done to the inside of the house plus the house has a slate roof with strap hun g gutters wich we are gonna save the slates and install wedge plates behind the new gutters it was a pleasure working on this historic home"
"im glad i could help you get a new roof on your house with new skylights plus fix the warped wood that was causing some of the leaks in your house if you need anything in the future feel free to give me a call thanks it was a pleasure working for you and your friendly dog [member name removed]"
"even thou we wern't able to convince the association to put a dimensional roof on your house we still put a quality 3 tab shingle on paying attention to the critical areas were ice and snow builds up it was a pleasure putting your roof on your house"
Ed Popil came out to the house at the time and date we had set. Once he arrived, he introduced himself and asked me for an explanation of the work I wanted done (severe storm damage on the back side of the roof and leaks). We took a walk around the house as I showed him the primary areas of damage and also some fascia that had been blown off. Ed then grabbed his ladder and climbed up on the roof to perform a thorough inspection. Once he came back down, he pointed out some visible damage that I wasn't even aware of (dented gutter and soil stack cap) as well as an area that hadn't been properly installed by the original builder (no felt underlay leaving exposed wood once the shingles were torn away.).
At that point I began explaining in detail what I wanted done and what my expectations were. Ed was very forthcoming with information, almost answering many of my questions before I asked them. Some of the questions that I had, due to a lack of roofing knowledge on my part, Ed answered thoroughly and patiently. He also explained the brands of shingles that he offered and the methods and materials he would be using. None of the process was rushed or pressured. I told Ed that even though I would probably be going with his offer I still wanted to get the other two quotes. He told me that wasn't a problem, but that he would be back the next day to cover the exposed wood area of the roof anyway. And he did, even though I hadn't committed to the job yet.
The other roofer showed up and made a quote without even climbing up on the roof. He explained the brand of shingles he offered and why. Interestingly enough, one of the brands he offered Ed considered junk, and one of the brands Ed offered the second roofer considered junk. Ed hand nailed, the other guy used a nail gun. Both said their method was better. Kind of the same argument you would get from a GM & Ford guy. The second roofer's quote was about $500 higher. The third roofer never called me back.
At that point I began doing my research. I took the information I was given by both roofers and began to look at reviews of all of the brands of shingles offered by them, as well as materials and methods. I also began digging a little deeper into Popil roofing. The internet is a wonderful thing! I came away, not with an experts knowledge of roofing, but enough confidence in the choices I was making about the type, materials and methods of roofing I was about to pay hard earned money for. I also felt confident that Popil roofing was a reputable company that would do a quality job and be around to honor any warranty issues if they should arise.
We signed the contract and I had Ed make specific entries for the materials and methods I wanted used. Then it rained...and rained...and rained. Ed already knew this beforehand and told me he'd start the following week after the weather cleared out. He said the job would take three days. He called me Tuesday of the following week while it was still raining and said they'd be out about 11:00. He'd already looked at the radar. They showed up when they said they would and began the job. Three days later they were finished as promised and I had a beautiful new roof. Ed and I did a walk around as he did a final sweep with the magnet to look for any left over debris.
All in all Ed Popil was a professional throughout the entire job. After the roof was installed the Great Storm hit the following week. We even had a tornado warning in Brunswick. The roof was still intact and no leaks. The one area I was concerned about was the ridge vent over the garage. The builder installed an inferior undersized vent and whenever we had a driving rain water would get in through the vent a drip though the fluorescent fixture in the garage. So far, so good!
Would I use or recommend Popil Roofing in the future? Absolutely.
