I used Dyer Contracting because they were a local company. They replaced the roof and that seems good so far. The gutters also were replaced and are working well. They installed siding but did not caulk it and there are gaps in places, brought it to Dougs attention but it was never fixed. The Andersen windows were installed but problems with mismatched wood trim and they had to come back take them out sand them and restain. Still not a great match. They damaged several window sills had to point it out to them. They did not line up the framing that well, also did not cover new nails with putty until I complained. They did not insulate the windows properly and now I have drafts that were not present in the past. My house was very attractive with custom woodwork prior to their work now not so pretty with being mismatched. I finally gave up after weeks/months of dealing with them. Doug repeatedly said we can do it well and will make it right but never did. I will eventually have someone else come in but it will be costly to get it back to the way it was prior to Dyers work. I choose this company due to good BBB rating and neighbors recommended them, would not recommend them at all.

This is my experience as explained in the emails below between myself and the contractor.
10.6.12 at 2:46pm? I sent email to Dyer Contracting as a follow up to my Saturday afternoon call with the Dyer representative that I had worked with on the original roof install. I explained the situation again to him?nail heads were placed in the exposed bottom flashing of my turtle vents, furnace flue and other fixtures, not all vent flashings were done or nail heads caulked, AND THIS WAS NOT AUTHORIZED. I requested they come out to look at what was done. I also requested that all vent flashings be replaced to original install condition since exposed nail heads in bottom of vent flashings allow for more opportunity for water leakage, this typically is not a practice roofing contractors use, and I did not authorize this work.
10.8.12 at 2:57pm?I received an email from the representative at Dyer Contracting. He informed me that he and the owner inspected the roof, and the nails installed to secure the vents were done during original installation. The workers at my house did not install additional nails in vents. The representative provided me with a link explaining installation instructions by the vent manufacturer which did state ?keeping the nail heads under shingles where possible?. This was not done.
10.8.12 at 5:44pm?I sent an email to representative and owner explaining a few things:
? Disappointed they didn't return my calls but only corresponded via email.
? Asked why if my turtle vents, etc. were installed properly during the original roof installation, then why did I NOT see the exposed nail heads at the bottom of the vent flashings when I checked the roof after original install in October, 2011?
? Asked why if my turtle vents were installed properly as they said they were, then why did some vents have nail heads at the bottom of the exposed flashings, other vents did not have exposed nail heads(over the garage), and some nail heads were not even caulked, and one was rusting?
? Asked why do the turtle vents in the original roof installations completed on a neighbors home down the street and the State Farm agent?s building down the road?both of which they did--do not have nail heads at the bottom of the exposed vent flashings? So, if my roof was done correctly, then why does mine have nail heads in the vent flashings and the neighbors do not?
? Told them that I wish we could resolve this professionally and responsibly, together.
10.9.12 at 8:55am---I received an email from owner of Dyer Contracting that basically explained:
? This is the most ridiculous email that he had to write
? There is no nail conspiracy going on here.
? It seems you are obsessed with finding a problem with your roof.
? I am dumbfounded that you have any issues.
? Your concerns with nails on the roof vents are not valid.
? If we don?t nail the bottom of the vents down, high winds will lift the bottom of your vent allowing water to leak in.
? We have followed the manufacturer?s instructions for installing the vents.
? If you have any issues in the future call us, however we will not address the roof vents any further.
10.9.12 at 1:19pm?I sent my final email to the owner of Dyer Contracting only to reiterate the following:
? Not obsessed with my roof but I only would like what you had done to be corrected.
? After original roof installation there were no exposed nail heads at bottom of vent flashings, etc.?everything looked very clean with the install.
? After the 8.31.12 visit by your workers, there were exposed nail heads at bottom of vent flashings, etc.
? Some of the garage turtle vents had no nail heads in bottom flashings, other did have nail heads, and of those that did, they were not caulked----So, assuming the job was done correctly as you said, then why were the turtle vents done differently on the roof and not all in the same manner?
? Why is my installation of the turtle vents/furnace flue, etc. done differently than the other roofing jobs you had done in the neighborhood?they have no exposed nail heads in bottom vent flashings.
? Why do other roofing contractors I spoke to say they don?t place nails in the exposed turtle vent bottom flashing because it?s unsightly and prone to leakage?
? Your response or lack of one, regarding my concerns are not true, and imply that I don?t know what I have seen, or know what I?m talking about?basically, that I am a liar.
I hope this long explanation of my experience helps everyone to be better informed when looking for a roofing contractor.
