This contractor used a subcontractor to install the tile.  That part went well.  However Mike Kishmarton did not use the subcontractor to complete the finish work and it was improperly done.  I had to ask them to return to put the tile on the risers in the landing.  It looked awful.  Mike originally told me it would take the grout 3 weeks to cure, but when he returned to fix the risers in 1 week, he went ahead and sealed the grout and installed the wood strip to transition to the hardwood floor in the adjoining room. The wood transition trim was installed in two pieces and one piece was chipped.  I asked Mike, the owner, to replace it with a single piece of wood trim.  He gave me a story that he could not find trim in the length needed.  I had lumber yard custom make a transition trim wood strip per Mike Kishmarton's specifications.  (I should not have had to get my own material, but he claimed he could not get it...) He finally returned to install the transition strip a month later, but he again did not use the sub-contractor and left gaps between the wood and the tile.  Within 3 months the wood split.  Mike refused to fix it.
Summary is that this company is good at sales but the service is poor and they don't stand behind their work.  I would never use this contractor again.
Response from MTK Remodeling
"For starters, I did not use any subcontractors for this job. My partner was the one there to help with the job. We laid the tile floor in the galley Kitchen. At no point while we were laying the tile was Ms. Vail home. Her son was there to let us in and then he had to leave. I also asked that she call me after she returned home to let me know what she thought of the tile work. She called and said that she was very pleased with the result. As far as the grout is concerned, she was told that it could take up to two weeks for it to completely cure. After a week and a half we returned to seal the grout. We also had to move her appliances out of the kitchen before we could seal the floor. There were no additional charges for the extra labor involved. As far as the tile for the risers for the steps, that was not in the original bid for the job. Ms. Vail stated on the night that I was there to originally look at the job that she would be painting the risers. So tiling them was not added into the original bid. But after talking to her I felt that it would not take long, so we did it. Again we did not charge her anything extra for the time, labor, or extra materials needed. The original transitions strips were installed and after she inspected it, there was a chip in the wood. I spoke with her and said that I would certainly check my vendors and suppliers to see if I could get one in a single piece. None of my vendors offered something in that length. So in a phone conversation she said that she would check around to see what she could find. At no point did I tell her that she had to do that. She volunteered to look for herself. When she found a lumber yard to custom make one, she called and asked if she could give them my number in case there were any questions about the piece. At no point did I receive any calls regarding that piece. I told her to have them make it like the original pieces because they fit nice with the unevenness of her wood floors. She took it upon herself to change that and make the slope of the piece a little more gradual. That was not done by me. I then returned again to remove the chipped pieces and install her new transition. After everything was done I made sure and asked her to look to make sure that she was completely satisfied with everything. And before I walked out her door she stated that everything looked great. After a few months went by I received a call from my brother in law about her floor. Ms. Vails’ son had been complaining to him about the transition strip. She did not contact me about any issues. After seeing a picture of the split transition strip, in my opinion, it is quite apparent that appliances were moved across it and that is the reason for the damage. It had nothing to do with my workmanship. The resolution that she is proposing is quite irrational as well. She would like half of the total cost for the entire job refunded so that someone else can come in and charge her no more than $100 to do the job. I feel that it is totally unfair. Ms. Vail has not been reasonable in her request to resolve this issue, so therefore I am not willing to work with her."
