Jun 2010
The job went 75% longer than predicted, largely due to tedious brick work. Overall, crew was courteous and work was done as expected, at least on the surface. The exception: the crew apparently cut corners for an unknown reason. After removing original walkway bricks, they covered the base patio and walkway material (very hard layer) with a thin layer of soil and planted grass. After two seasons of trying to keep the grass growing (over the course of summer it just thins out and is the first to brown out), I discovered that there is only one and one-half inch of soil over these old walkway areas. Little wonder it won't support grass, or any other planting that I might want to put there. After writing the proprietor, David Thorn, DTR sent Derek Setter, the original project overseer, to investigate. He expressed surprise at the finding and agreed that it was a problem. After two weeks of no follow-up, I persisted to get a reply as to DTR's intention about this issue. The reply was that I probably would never get a lush lawn to grow there anyway. Period. That's it. Since then, even though I stated that was not a sufficient response and I expect a phone call from Derek or David, I have gotten only silence. David Thorn appears to be impossible to reach when there is an issue. As a result, I have broken up the hard base myself and paid another contractor to haul that debris away; that enabled me to reclaim part of what was brick patio as a perennial bed. DTR was fairly responsive when there was a project to sell and prepare for; not so when we discovered the neglected part of their installation work.
