1. Removal of the arch and repair of the ceiling and walls went well and looked good.
2. The shower lever, not so much - when I returned home in the afternoon, the lever had been installed at the same level the original ones had been instead of being moved up to its new location on the wall. I was told that there was wood that was in the spot where I asked it to be moved. Instead of calling and asking me what to do, they decided to just put it at the same level. When i told Joe this was unacceptable and that I should have been contacted, he said he would have to charge me to move it. I agreed to split the different, all the while stating that it was their mistake, not mine. Furthermore, there are now 2 access panels on the adjoining wall (my son's bedroom) because of their error.
3. The tiles replaced around the shower lever and spout are completely uneven. I thought that once the tiles were all the same color (after reglazing), that it wouldn't be as noticeable. Unfortunately, I think it is more so. Also, they were directly instructed NOT to use sanded grout, but the reglazing vendor indicated that there was sanded grout in the joints, making adhesion very difficult.
4. Ceiling exhaust fan install went well, but it quit working a couple of months after the project was completed.
5. GFCI install - successful
6. For the light install, they first just installed the new light instead of moving the box up higher on the wall. This blocked the medicine cabinet from being able to open. This was rectified, though sloppily.
7. The 2nd part of the project was never completed. We had agreed that he would return (at an agreed date/time) to remove the toilet and sink and to diagnose my slow drain. We set a day/time for him to return. At 9:00 a.m. the day of, I received a voicemail that they would not be there. The reglazing vendor was to arrive the next morning to complete his part. The Handyman Company left my high and dry. Fortunately, my neighbor was available to help my at about 9:00 p.m. that night and we got everything removed. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to completely scrub the bathroom to the level that was necessary and it resulted in more work for the reglazer.
Sadly, I would not recommend this company, despite the fact that they are nice people. Maybe something was going wrong in their lives at the time, and I could have understood that. What I don't understand is the lack of accountability they held for themselves and their not communicating more appropriately.
"Mrs. [Member Name Removed], The Handyman Company is under new ownership with new sub contractors, we would like to apologize for what how the job was performed from the previous owner. Danny Cook is the new owner and bought the company in November of last year. We also own Cooks Home Improvements, LLC. Please don't let this discourage you from giving our companies another change to help with any up coming projects. Thank you, Michelle Cook"
We would not even consider hiring a different contractor to work around our home. In fact this company is coming back to build a 8' X 16' deck onto the side of our house.
Joe and his team finished our 1200 sq ft basement on-budget and ahead of schedule. The process of working with Joe could not have been easier. His bid was timely and he made sure to understand exactly what we wanted done. I had specific requests about a play house to be built under the stairs for my children, and Joe was very accommodating to my ideas.
Once work began, it went smoothly. Joe and his crew arrived exactly when they said they would every day and were always pleasant to deal with. Everyday, Joe would check in to make sure we were happy with the progress and make sure there were no changes needed. When it was discovered than an exterior door to the basement needed replacement (not in the original scope of work), Joe alerted me to the issue, gave me the pros and cons of fixing it, and the additional price he quoted me for fixing it was more than fair considering the amount of extra work required.
We are extremely pleased with the finished result. We chose to paint ourselves to save some money, and my father-in-law (the "volunteer" painter) has commented on what a nice job they did with the drywall, which I understand can be tricky to do correctly.
Once we "rebuild" the savings a bit, I'll be calling Joe to work on our master bathroom remodel.
The quote - The quote process is very informal and weak on details. Joe creates his quotes quickly and with no design process. If you need any design support on a project, do not expect to get it. Joe gives you the impression that the details can be addressed as the project gets started but any change from Joe's initial notes is a "change order" that costs money. The price was right, but now looking back on the projects, I know why.
The quality of work - I am not sure where to start on this one. The drywall work is rough in many areas. I can see seams, areas that weren't sanded at all, and even drywall boards that were bowed. I noticed in a different review, someone commented that their outlet is tilted. I had them do over 20 outlets in my projects; I don't think a single one is straight. In a 24 in stretch of a wall, there is NO stud (you should have a stud every 16 in in a wall). I have had repeated plumbing issues that are still not resolved. I have to bring in a different person to fix the issue because The Handyman Company quit returning my text messages and emails.
Professionalism - Joe and his "team" were very unprofessional. During our remodel, when we did not live in the home, they helped themselves to our drinks in the refrigerator without asking. And not just soda, but also beer. They drank on the job! Never, not once, did they clean up after themselves. Joe himself was also very unprofessional. He fired his entire team right in the middle of my remodel. During the entire time they were at my house (3.5 months), they just left all their tools all over my garage to the point where I couldn't even walk through the place.
The details - During projects, you count on your contractor to look out for the details. For example, the placement of light switches. It is something that is easily looked over as the homeowner when you are thinking about all the design and material considerations. But, Joe, with experience in doing this, should be on top of this. Yet, we have two (yes, two!) doors that enter into our house from the outside that have NO light switch. This means one needs to walk into a pitch dark room and find a switch across the room. Another example is with the doors. In my basement, they installed six doors, but didn't put a single door stopper on. Who installs a door without putting a door stop on? It costs $1.50 and takes about 30 seconds. But, for some reason, The Handyman Company leaves that up to you to finish off. There are many examples in this area, but these should give a general picture.
Post-work support - We have had a number of issues with leaking pipes that Joe's team did while here. Some they fixed, but it took five trips across 5 weeks for them to address correctly. Two leaks they have not fixed, and we are forced to hire real professional to get the issue resolved. Joe quit answering our texts and emails.
The only area of praise I would give The Handyman Company would be with tile work. We had a tile floor and backsplash done in our kitchen, and I think they did a nice job on it.
Overall, for a project of size (>$2,000), I would recommend finding someone else.
In July 2013 I contacted Joe Roberts, owner of The Handyman Company, for a bid to touch up exterior paint of our white brick home, tuck point where necessary and repair, paint and rehang shutters . Mr. Roberts said he preferred T/M to an estimated bid. I explained I was not comfortable with T/M. He assured me that unlike other contractors his workmen were excellent, did not waste time. He added I could trust him to closely supervise the work and complete the work in a timely fashion adding that once started his men would not be going off to do other jobs like other contractors tend to do. He also added T/M would be less since contractors factor in higher bids to cover themselves from the unexpected.
I contacted him in July he explained he had several other jobs to complete before starting our project. He assured me that when his team did start our project would get full attention. This was not the case. The job was not started until mid September. On November 4th the job was not completed. Workers were schedule only 10 days out of 46, two of these days only one man came and stayed only 1to 1.5 hrs. His workers were great when they were here. Mr. Roberts was not on site as promised and had little knowledge of the actual work and seemed not to care.
I hired The Handyman Company based on the Angie List reviews of 2012 and early 2013. Apparently high marks increased his business to the point that the attributes: Punctuality. Responsiveness, Professionalism, diminished considerably as demand grew. When the men failed to show up the entire week of Oct. 28th, I called and asked Mr. Roberts to come to view the work left to do and explain why his men had not been scheduled. Mr. Roberts was defensive and had "excuses" for not assigning men to our project. Weather can be a consideration for exterior work, however, inside space was provided for work on the shutters. The most upsetting excuse was his condescending explanation: "as you should know, business is business and other jobs were more important than ours and in business you need to take care of the more important customer". Others on the property overheard the conversation with Mr. Roberts. One stated he was appalled at the attitude and rudeness of the contractor and was tempted to step in. Clearly something has changed in the way Mr. Roberts conducts his business. This is unfortunate because he has a great crew, but they are spread too thin which is unfair to them and to the customer. ( this was confirmed by several of his men )
During my 72years I have never fired anyone from a job. Due to his attitude toward me and his failure to perform as stated when seeking the job, I asked him to leave. Our painting is not finished, several shutters are not attached properly, winter weather is here. Enough said.
