MIDWESTERN PLUMBING SERVICE INC

About us

Back in 1978, Archie Wilson and Gene Hehenmann made the decision to leave their jobs and form a partnership, Midwestern Plumbing Service. In the beginning, it was a small company, not unlike so many start-ups. But they worked hard, getting business that could keep their plumbers busy. Over the years, they built their company along with their reputation as a dependable and competitive contractor focusing on the multi-family and commercial/industrial business.

Disposal broken. Plumber got it working but made horrible sound like something was in it. He refused to look inside and said I needed a new disposal and would order it for me. After he left I reached in and pulled out a bottle cap. Noise gone. Disposal working great. No need for new one. A few days after the plumber came there was a leak under the sink. A connector had been knocked loose and I couldn't get it tightened. Called Midwestern to come back and fix it. They canceled due to bad weather (completely reasonable) but never called back to reschedule. I called them and they said I was already on the schedule for that Saturday. No one bothered to tell me. I had to get a friend to come over bc I had to work. She waited 3 hours and no one showed up. When I called, they said I was not on the schedule. So, I rescheduled again for that Wednesday. Again I had to work so had to have another friend come over. Again, no one showed. I'm done. What a completely disorganized, unprofessional company.

Fixed problem with sump pump and drainage systems for hundreds less than other companies. Work was competed in a timely and effective fashion.

Fantastic company with a great, professional staff. Sonny came out on a Saturday to assess the water line and give me an estimate; he was friendly and helpful and gladly answered my questions. He suggested replacing my water line using a method called Directional Boring which allows the pipe to be replaced without digging up the entire yard. After I met with Sonny, I still got 2 more bids to be on the safe side, but Midwestern's price was much lower than the other 2 (by at least $3,500). The price they quoted me was in line with prices I got from neighbors, so I had a strong suspicion the other 2 bids were way out of line, and basically an attempt to rip me off. Midwestern did not require a down payment on the work, which I appreciated, whereas the other 2 bidders wanted a 25% deposit. On the day of installation, Midwestern arrived on the scheduled time and the foreman walked me around the job and set realistic expectations as to how long it would take and possible damage that might be caused by the boring process. All of the staff members were dressed in uniforms and were polite and considerate of my home. They did a fantastic job and I would recommend them highly for this kind of work!

Explained to Company what we needed done up front. Said they could handle the job. Also we supplied the pump and other materials to do the job. Worker was nice but spent most of his time on the phone having someone walk him through the install process. That was a red flag to me that he might not know what he was doing. Literally it took all day to replace the pump. He told me the floats were bad on the old pump and not able to use for the new one pump. He went and purchase 2 new floats which we were ok with. At the end of the day the pump was working ok. They wipped out $200 extra dollars on the original estimate price. Extra $200 for two floats? Now fast forward to about 100 days. Septic pump not working. Called in another septic repair company. Come to find out they wired the pump in backwards, one of the wires was barely attached to the electrical, and there was only 1 float replaced not the 2 they charged me for.

I contacted Midwestern Plumbing last week and explained what needed to be done. They arranged to send a plumber with the knowledge and experience necessary to do the installation. Brian arrived right on time and removed the old sink with the faucet along with the garbage disposal right away. He installed the new sink and faucet with no difficulty including re-installating the garbage disposal and the dishwasher plumbing. When he finished, everything worked perfectly and the area was clean. The new sink and faucet are working exactly as we had hoped.

I had been looking at a gas tankless water heater as a replacement when needed. I called and had all my questions answered that I had even after reading about that style of water heater. I was given an estimate, which the price was a bit higher than expected but, was able to get installed the next day. Both workers did their job well, completed in a timely manner, cleaned up what little mess there was. Had I replaced the water heater with the same unit I would have done the job myself. Since I did not have a way to cut and thread steel pipe gas line, having a plumber do the job was the best way to go for the changes that were needed to install this unit. As I said, the price was a bit higher than expected but, next day service, the time on the job, the changes that had to be made with the water as well as gas lines, I would use them again. If you do not understand labor rates and material cost, ( which would have been less with a different heater ) then one would say the job was expensive but I went with top of the line heater. I am pleased with the job they did.

I think they are expensive. I am not sure whether I would use them again in the future. I would probably would look around first.

They were excellent.  They were able to get to our job in a timely manner.  The technician explained what the situation was currently and what could possibly happen for future drain issues.  They gave great advise and options.

The tech. Sonny, from Midwestern Plumbing arrived within 2 hours of our call, and proceeded to auger through the blocked drain line.   Although the blockage was cleared, the water was not draining as well as expected.  Sonny proceeded to check the cavitette tank in our yard and found that it was full.  This meant that there was another blockage between the cavitette and the main sewer line out in the street.  Midwestern does not pump out septic systems, so Sonny gave us the names of several other companies that do that work.  Since the day after Thanksgiving is not considered normal business hours by Midwestern Plumbing, they normally charge $360.00.  Because we needed additional work done to solve our drainage issues they gave us a reduced rate of $250. which was appreciated.
We called another company who came out later the same day and pumped out the cavitette, and then hydro-jetted the drain line from there to the street, finally solving our problem.  This work cost an additional $570.00

6/9/2014 had break in water line at meter.  Worker dug up the line, damaging my neighbor's water line in the process.  He repaired both.  However my neighbor reported dirty water which they repaired a week later.  The worker said he would have Kevin Helvey call me to give me a price to have the water line replaced as it was Blue Max and would keep breaking.  Kevin never called, so I called him and left a message for him to call me.  As of 6/20/2014 still no return call.  So, I called another company (AMS Construction) and they came out and replaced my water line.  AMS Construction was very good.  Midwestern Plumbing was not good.  I would not recommend them to anyone.

They were probably one of the worst companies I have ever done business with. They refused to come back and do any work after paying them. I had to have another company come in to install 2 new toilets. I would not recommend them to anyone and am upset I wasted money on them.

He used a small snare to clear drain. It didn't stop the leak. We called another plumber who used a snake that ran out to the street. This worked. No more leaking water. cost $200. Fixed leak in bathroom for $49.

My first contact with Sales Rep at Midwestern Plumbing was very polite and informative. Did more research. Called Midwestern back to schedule appointment and they were able to schedule us in 2 days. The plumber was on time. I was told there would be two plumbers due to the size and weight of the water heater (75 gallon). I noticed on the container holding the water heater that it recommended two people to handle water heater. WhenI asked the plumber if someone else would be coming to help, his reply was "No, that would cost the company more money." My husband did have to help him get water heater downstairs and get old water heater upstairs. The date of service was during snowy weather and the plumber did not have any kind of protective floor covers or protective shoe covers. i covered surfaces with my own towels. The installation itself went very smoothly and was done in a timely manner.

They were here for about an hour and he was not able to clear the drain. When he was finished, the tub would not drain at all. His suggestions was to bring in another crew to cut into the pipes to find the clog. They were going to have to come out another day. We ended up having another plumber come out on the Home Warranty who was able to clear the drain in 15 minutes with the snake. I called them back because I was changed and nothing was fixed. The service person was courteous and said he would follow up with me which they never did. I was disappointing because I had used them before with no problems.

*UPDATE: I called Midwestern plumbing to fix an emergency basement leak after this service. They were prompt and did a great job. When pricing out that work order they actually credited me a small amount for the inconvenience of this service call where they were not able to successfully snake the drain. They did so automatically without me having to ask again. I appreciated that they remembered my concern and came up with a mutually beneficial solution. I will definitely use them again.

The service was excellent. They did a great job with the estimate and explaining the services. The guys on the site were very professional and respectful of our time. They also were very knowledgeable with coordinating with the city. We have not had any issues and it appears the work was done very well.

The young guy showed up. I explained the problem of having amber colored crystals coming out of all the water faucets. He asked if I had a water softener and I said yes, and told him it had not been in use in 10 years. I took him to the water softener and he said "well, this is your problem, the water softener is breaking down and putting these crystals in your entire house water system." I asked what needed to be done about it. He replied "well, you need to cut this pipe right here and this one right here and join them together to bypass the water softener." I told him to go ahead and do it, and he said "well, that could run you into some money to do that, you should probably be able to do that yourself." The young kid was trying to make a quick exit, that was apparent and he did not want to take on the job. Realizing that I did not want someone working on my plumbing who obviously did not want to work on it, I told him I would find someone else to do it.
He promtply charged me $150.00 for the service call during which HE PERFORMED NO WORK. I called another plumbing outfit and they did the whole thing for $245 dollars. I wasted $150 on Midwestern Plumbing and was totally ripped off.
I will NEVER use or refer anyone to use Midwestern Plumbing again. Stay away from them, they do not want your business and will overcharge you for doing nothing.

Midwestern Plumbing had contacted several utility companies including the phone company to mark any underground lines or pipes ( I knew this by the orange paint on the grass). While I was there, the crew while grading the side lawn, hit and broke the underground phone line that leads to the house. The crew said they would contact the phone company for it to be repaired. When they were done grading, the lawn had numerous sticks and twigs that needed to be racked and in some areas there was as much as a foot distance between the newly graded lawn and the existing lawn.  A few days later, I contacted Midwestern Plumbing to discuss some issues I had with the work that was performed and was told that they would be there on the following Monday and call me. They never called or came back. A few weeks later, after some rain, I noticed that the water is pooling where it was graded. I contacted Western Plumbing again, and again I was told they would be there within a couple of days to examine the lawn. Once again, they never show-up or called. At this point, I will have it regraded and I will contact the phone company and have the phone line repaired at my own expense.
