First I called, and then the rest of the contact was by email. I had a long list of due diligence questions, and the person I contacted answered many of them. There were others that I think it might have been possible to answer but weren't answered. The process was somewhat frustrating, but one of the better responses I got from a building I had under consideration, because -- in fairness -- the coop purchase process in NYC is arcane and backwards. Generally it's extremely difficult to get the sort of info I was asking for because building managements are unwilling to provide it until there's a signed contract -- which means you have to pay an attorney to prepare a contract and review the building's proprietary lease, etc. And so if there's something about the building's finances and management that will make you decide not to buy the place, you're already out $1,000+ of fees just finding that out.
