My driveway has a lot of underground water around it, and that made this a very difficult job. And soon after David and Seamus completed the work, tiny particles of dirty groundwater started to seep through. And that's when I learned how good these guys are. They came back to my home countless times (kidding aside, I lost count of how many times). We talked a lot about what was going on with the underground water, and what to do about it. Keep in mind I live in an area where people have multiple sump pumps, basements flood a lot, and many driveways are riddled with cracks. After they cleaned the stains off the driveway on a few occasions, David resolved to build a 3-foot deep, gravel-filled trench bisecting the driveway which would collect ground water, drain it to the side of the driveway, and run it away from the pavement towards the street. He also repaved the part of the driveway which had been stained with groundwater. He offered to split the cost of this modification with me, which I thought was more than fair! After all, given the cost of the additional asphalt and the need to pay his laborers, he may well have had to take a loss on the additional work. My job ended up being a much more cumbersome and costly job than he knew it was going to be when he first quoted me a price. But he still wanted to make sure it got done right in the end. He wanted to make sure I was happy, and in the end it was done right. I recommended him to my neighbor based upon his professionalism and willingness to stand by his work, and my neighbor used him to seal his driveway just a few days ago. Empire Paving is top notch, and I recommend them!
"That's a bit disappointing {Member's name} because you said we done a great job for you."
They sent a team of 3-5 workers, depending upon which activities were the focus for the day. The work went smoothly and quickly. There were only a couple of days when the noise was bothersome to our dog in the house...that was when they were using a small electric jackhammer to remove the cemented pavers from the front steps.
Whenever there were issues, such as the step sizes not being identical, they brought it to our attention and suggested and made corrections within the original budget. They also clearly explained when they needed to wait between step and the logic. For example, they waited to do the second stucco coat until the day they installed the bluestone. They explained that doing so allowed them to blend the stucco seamlessly to the bluestone instead of having to patch and small spaces that might have occurred had they put the second coat of stucco on and later laid the bluestone.
In addition to the high quality of the completed work, they did and excellent job of cleaning up at the end of each day and taking all trash with them. Last, they gave us advice on how best to maintain the completed work.
Only minor issue was that weather caused them to begin multiple jobs resulting in a couple of days when they showed up later than expected. Overall, this was not a large factor and driven by weather that prevented them from being able to work continuously and exclusively on our job as planned.
Everything went well except there was a problem with the Cambridge pavers that were giving a haze and fading caused by Paver efflorescence. The guy from Cambridge was not customer friendly but David took matters in to his own hands and has provided 3 washings of the pavers and the Paver efflorescence is almost completely gone and they will be back to seal the pavers. I highly recommend these guys they are truly professional and the customer comes first.
08-02-14 Pavers are looking good and will seal in the Spring. These guys are great !!!
They initially came to fix my flagstone walkway that was literally falling to pieces. They also rebuilt the stone wall at the edge of the garage was falling over (loose stones=>cemented in). They also dug a 3' drainage ditch out back to catch water on the high side of the house as well as repointed the back door stop and stucco'd some areas around the house. We haven't had water come into the house since then (i.e. Irene, Sandy, etc.)
They were prompt, organized, and went beyond the call of duty to make sure everything was done perfectly. They also rebuilt the stoop at the front door and midway through the project I decided to extend the walkway to include a nice sized patio.
The pictures speak for themselves. These guys worked for five days straight in the grueling heat and really impressed my wife (which means I win).
This time around they paved my driveway with asphalt, built a nice belgian block curb along one side, rearranged the other loose stones on one side of the driveway, repointed the cinderblocks in my basement foundation (cracked), redid the sheetrock and insulation in one of my bedrooms, and lifted up my paver bricks and relayed them (had moved).
I wish every contractor could be like these guys - hardworking, honest, and very decently priced for the quality of work they performed.
Hats off to David and Seamus......
