Each package of flooring contained an instruction booklet about correct installation. Mr Suqui and his brother threw away the booklets with the packaging and went on to ignore every single instruction. They put in the moisture barrier wrong side up (the packaging specifies how to lay it but they did not read it.) They arranged the bamboo planks so that the joins created an H pattern down the centre of the room. I caught these mistakes quickly and insisted that they correct them and lay the planks in a random pattern as is normal practise. I also pointed out that they needed to leave an expansion gap at the edges of the room. I was not able to stay and watch the work as I had my own work to do.
Because a friend of my husband had recommended them, I was still assuming at this point that WJR Construction Inc. knew basically how to lay a click lock floor. I was wrong! A week after the floor was laid, the flooring began to rise up and buckle (our walk out basement floor is completely dry and we use a dehumidifier.) A week later as it got worse, my husband removed the baseboard trim. The instruction booklet specified a 1/2 inch expansion gap at the sides of the planks and 1/4 inch at the ends. We found that WJR used no spacers or chalk line and cut each board carelessly so the expansion gaps ranged raggedly from 0 inches to 3/4 inch at the ends of the planks. At the sides of the planks the gap was less than 1/16 inch in some places. Also the underlay was cut too small and did not extend a little way up the wall as instructed. When the flooring had expanded slightly as is usual in summer, it had buckled. Our beautiful and very expensive flooring (around $3000) was ruined by poor craftsmanship and carelessness.
My husband contacted Mr Suqui multiple times. Suqui turned up once and roughly cut an expansion gap along one section that we had exposed next to a wall - and then left. The flooring adjacent to that spot flattened out. However there are other places where the floor is badly buckled. The trim has not been replaced and the door saddles were not fixed in place. My husband continued to call him and Suqui sent a couple of flooring guys. Both said that they needed to remove all the trim and add proper expansion gaps but neither came back. We were given appointments by Suqui and left waiting while no-one turned up three different times.
This past Saturday (10th August 2013) we waited home all day because Flavio Suqui told us that a flooring guy would come and fix the floors. No-one came and no-one contacted us. My husband called Suqui and got another excuse. Two months after the installation we have contacted another company to give us an estimate for addressing the problems. The flooring may need to be partially taken up and reinstalled and of course we will have to pay all over again. Flavio Suqui and WJR Contracting Inc. do not have the skills they claim to have and apparently don't care enough to even check how to perform their work correctly.
We have photographs documenting the faulty installation and terrible workmanship. We are also making a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and the Consumer Protection Agency for Westchester County.
