I'd taken my pets to see Dr. Lopez on several prior visits for routine things and was sufficiently and quot;satisfiedand quot; - mostly due to the fact that I am new to the area and was unfamiliar with my options. This particular visit was to treat my sick cat. The Cat was vomiting and lethargic, not by any means typical behavior. Dr. Lopez got a brief oral history, then he squeezed my cat 's abdomen -- then he walked out of the room, and didn't come back for quite some time. When he did re-enter he then proceeded to tell me that it was most likely Feline panleukopenia (leukemia for cats -- and highly contagious to other cats in the same home) - he got me so worked up in his description I was ready to put my cat down out of sheer fear that is what was making my cat so sick. Then he tells me he can just take a little blood and do a test that will cost only $36.00. Of course I had to know, I have other cats at home, and was scared silly. Ten minutes later - the test was negative. From there I asked what we could do, since I obviously wouldn't be putting the cat down. His response was to stare at me,and then tell me that the cat must have the equivalent of IBS -- but for cats and that the cat would have it for life, and there wasn't really a lot to be done - and that is the only other explanation he could come up with. He and quot;prescribedand quot; an 19$ bag of special food (that none of my cats will eat), vitamin paste, and generic Imodium (the cat was vomiting not having chronic diarrhea). The next morning I discovered that the cat had expelled a 3-5 inch piece of curling ribbon in a pile of vomit, and has been fine ever since.
Response from Wellsville Veterinary Hospital
"How was anyone supposed to know there was a piece of ribbon in the stomach? Even with ultrasound or barium x-ray that could still be one of many possibilities; some others you mentioned. Fortunately this didn't progress to an exploratory surgery to retrieve the ribbon. Count yourself lucky and hide all the potential foreign bodies."
