A very mixed bag. We were excited about the price he quoted us, and he was very responsive and helpful over the phone, even before we had committed to service. The estimate was very attractive (maybe almost a little too good to be true) and we went with him. He was very punctual the first day. We actually asked him to do a couple of extra jobs for us, and his one day repair stretched into two (he was punctual the second day too). But we had mixed results, and while I think he is probably overall a pretty solid electrician and such, i don't think we'd have him back to do more work.
We had measured and bought a new lighting can for the recessed space above our sink. Turns out, the one we bought didn't fit. Whoops, our bad. So he went to Lowe's or Home Depot (which we thought was cool of him) with the measurements HE took, after coming to our place, visualizing the space, and came back 45 or so minutes later with an LED can to install. During the install, and after having power-drilled screws through the new can at odd and awkward angles, it became obvious that this can ALSO was the wrong fit. Frustrated, I just opted to leave it as is, since 2+ hours of labor had already been invested into the installation of a 25 dollar lamp.
He took down our old ugly kitchen ceiling fan, and started to install a nice new brushed-nickel one we had bought on sale at Lowe's. We had selected this one because of its flush-mount install capability, because our kitchen ceiling has relatively low clearance, and my wife is tall. I indicated that we needed it installed with as much floor-to-fan-blades clearance as possible. But as he was installing it, I noticed he had the drop bar in place, adding a full 2 or 3 inches to how far it hung down. I said, can't this unit be flush mounted to the ceiling. He said no, and he was doing it the right way. I grabbed the install instructions, and found the flush-mount directions, and was about to show him, when he said something to the effect of, "Aw, I never read those instructions they include with the units," and made some joke about how that's not what a "man" does. I insisted - and showed him the flush-mount instructions, and had him take the unit back down, and re-install it the way I wanted it. More lost time.
That said, his installs of the pendant lights were seamless and gorgeous work, and decently fast (to my untrained eye). And his installs of the fluorescent light boxes in the basement went fine, as far as I could tell. He installed the outside outlet really fast as well. Communication was generally good throughout (aside from the aforementioned hiccups).
He was also really good about accepting a delay in payment - and to be fair, I have stretched that delay far longer than he ever intended due to some family financial circumstances (***John, if you're reading this now, 8/4/15, I have your money and can pay you today - finally!***) He mailed us an invoice, and it was only 0.25 - 0.5 hours longer than I had counted (I was keeping track). Not too bad, actually. However: He did not discount hours for the LED-can fiasco or the double-labor for the errant ceiling fan install, takedown and re-install. Also: During the 2nd day, I had expressed some frustration at some of this, and he said, well, I'll tell you what, why don't I install an extra fixture for you in the basement, on the house, which he did, sort of: When I tallied up the hours on the invoice, I was, by my count, charged for that labor as well (and I had actually already bought all the materials myself, so there really was no discount). That said, at $60 per hour, he is so much less expensive than many other electricians that even the $800-ish was still a pretty good price, even though I think I should have been billed for about 1.5 fewer hours.
*HOWEVER* Clean-up was a MAJOR issue. There were piles of drill debris and sawdust all over my basement, the kitchen counters were sprinkled with debris, and I found a screw that had apparently fallen from the ceiling fixture above my sink, into my garbage disposal. I spent well over an hour cleaning up the messes.
Like I said, mixed bag. I think I've done a pretty fair job of balancing the praise with the criticism, and my comments are accurate. Obviously, his overall feedback is high on Angie's List, so maybe this was just an anomalous below-average interaction. I might recommend, but only with some major caveats. Overall, I guess not, which is too bad, since his skill set seems to be very large and his hourly labor cost is pretty good.
