I would definitely hire again, and highly recommend him to those needing insulation work.
In brief, this is an older home (1870) that doesn't have a proper attic, but does have a few feet between the ceiling and the roof. It lacked any ventillation in this space, and when I bought the home a few months ago the inspector recommended that soffit vents be installed.
Nick went through the house and explained how the ventilation would actually work in this structure, and recommended some box vents at various points on the roof--he gave me some options as to how many, being honest about the relative improvement from adding more, and giving me his honest opinion that I really didn't need as many as I thought I did (I was all for adding them to every slope, for example).
Obviously he was given me unbiased information, since the fewer vents I installed the less he would make--but he was clear that the return on investment diminished after a few key vents were placed, and made sure I understood why he recommended fewer.
He also tapped the ceilings to find out how the insulation seemed, and in one of the bedrooms suggested that the area above seemed to be light and should be filled in with some blown celluose (would have to rip off the roof to lay down fiberglass, since there is no attic and no access to the narrow space from inside the house at all).
He gave me a "worst case" scenario estimate, which assumed full insulation for the area of concern and the maximum number of box vents if he found problems once he started---and made it clear that the actual bill would probably be less, but wanted me to know what the maximum would be (which was still a really good value).
DAY OF THE JOB
Nick showed up on time and got straight to work: he called me about an hour later to say that there was plenty of insulation above the bedroom, and that when he checked the other areas there was so much more insulation that it didn't make sense to put in a bunch of vents since there wasn't going to be any air flow. He explained that I only need a few vents in strategic locations, and finished the job in a few hours.
The end result was that the job was much smaller (and thus cheaper) than anticipated.
BOTTOM LINE
Nick is an owner / operator and is on every single job. He is scrupulously honest, explains every last thing that he is doing before, during, and after, will give you all the options and a fair recommendation as to what is most value for dollar spent.
He may be a bit gruff, but you will not find a better deal or a better job anywhere in town, I guarantee. He will be right on time, the work area will be cleaner than when he got there, the job will be done right, and I recommend him without hesitation to anyone looking for insulation / ventillation work. He's really terrific.
