After speaking to a roofer here in Carthage that gave a very high quote for doing nothing more than tossing a some de-icing pucks on the roof without manually pulling down any of the ice, I Googled me some other options.  Ken Tibbles Roofing turned up a great and informative website.  Stan (the son who took over the family business) answered and coordinated a team that he already had working in the village to stop buy to do the estimate thereby saving me any distance fees.  The quote was reasonable and his team leader took the time to explain the different options and why they would choose their approach.  Stan followed up in a timely fashion to organize the actual work.  His team did a great job.  I was a bit confused by the final bill as it seemed to be more than the original quote, but Stan was good enough to explain the difference.  He offered to give me a discount back to the original quote, but as the additional charges totally made sense, I told him it wouldn't be necessary and that I would be contacting him in the good weather at some point to do any roof repairs needed after the ice and probably to completely re-do all of the leaky porches.
I have already referred a neighbor to Tibbles roofing but she was in a bit of a hurry and so used the same local roofer that had given me a crazy quote on the ice removal during the winter to put on a metal roof for her when she didn't hear back from Stan.  She absolutely regrets it as they didn't do a very good job, more than took their time, did not do what they said they would do, acted as though her husband didn't remember what they had said correctly and then told her husband the same thing about her and didn't even check in with her before they left at the end of the job (although it could have been that they bailed because they didn't even properly finish some of the work.) and came in substantially over quote.  She also said they were very difficult to deal with... she really REALLY wishes now she had waited or been more persistent to get in touch with Tibbles.
While I was hoping I would be able to reach out to Stan earlier in the Summer, I have been trying to reach him the last couple of weeks, but haven't heard back yet.  They do great work and there are alot of shysters in the roofing/contracting world so I am trying to hold out until he can call me back.  I've learned from the neighbor, needless to say!  Hey, Stan... if you read this, give me a call!  We Need You Guys!!!!

Stan and his workers were courteous and efficient. This was not an easy project and they pulled it off without a hitch. After working with poor roofers in the past, it was a pleasure to have someone like Stan to explain and implement the roof replacement. I would recommend him to anyone needing a professional and honest roofing company.

This is a great company in business for over 40 years. Although it called Ken Tibbles, its now run by his son and they seem to be carrying on the tradition of good quality workmanship and professionalism. I paid a bit more than some of the other quotes I got, but I am confident this company will be around for years to come and will make good on guarantees. One thing to be wary of in a roofing company is there are many fly-by-nights that don't last the length of the materials warrantee. A 30-year shingle has little warrantee if the installer is out of business after 5 years. Ken Tibbles roofing has four decades of track record and I would recommend them.
