General Remodeling
We hired this company to put an addition on our home (garage tear down, dig and pour foundation, rebuild garage and build additional living space above new garage and existing house). We signed our contract on 9/15/10. He verbally assured us that work would be completed by 12/31/10.
After starting to take down part of our garage he stopped showing up, saying he was unable to secure a dumpster. The fact that it took him 2 weeks to get a dumpster to my home should have been my first clue that his ability to complete tasks in a timely manner is nonexistent. He showed up 4 days in the month of November. As of his originally promised completion date he had not yet put a roof on the addition, much less completed anything. We then had snow that prevented him from working on our project for 8 weeks. Had he put the roof on by that time he would have been able to work inside.
In the beginning of April he promised he would be done by May 1 and promised $100 off per day he was delinquent. The smartest thing we did in this entire process was to have him sign a letter to that effect.
Final inspection was 9 months and 8 days after contract signing. Taking out the inclement weather time it took him over 7 months to do this job.
His work is fine. He never failed an inspection. His management skills are not.
If you have no specific time line and don't care how often your contractor shows (or doesn't show) then feel free to hire him.
