Home Building
He was the most expensive estimate (out of four), but we chose him because he stated that he would never "ask us for more money despite whatever he finds while renovating the bathroom." However, he did in fact ask for more money. When he heard that I was hesitant about him already asking for an additional amount before work started, he back tracked on the phone and stated, "He would handle it." Then, when he came to take measurements, it was a different story. He asked for $50 more, which didn't seem like a lot, but I should have taken that as a sign of whats to come.
He didn't provide us with a physical copy of what was expected of him, which was our first mistake. We did however, discuss getting a new toilet, which he did not do. It was a used toilet, which was evident because the tank ran for a very long period of time after flushing, as well as, it looked dirty, not pristine and new as you would expect.
Nevertheless, prior to renovations beginning, he showed up unannounced one day to take measurements. I very candidly expressed my irritation for this "surprise" visit to our home. I asked him straightforwardly to always call prior to coming over, as we were in the middle of something and had plans. He seemed as if he understood; however, he did it AGAIN. We were more than clear that we were moving on a certain day and that WE WOULD CONTACT HIM when he was allowed to enter the premises. Again, he did NOT listen. He showed up and actually WALKED into our house without even knocking, as if he OWNED the place, and was looking at our possessions as we had them all around the house preparing to load them. That day was so crazy and chaotic, we let it go, although very irritated and disgruntled at the complete rudeness.
In a few days, he finished the work and my husband went to view it. He gave him the last half of the balance, which was also another big mistake on our behalf. We now live almost two hours away, and whenwe returned to the property for final cleaning and completion of tasks, I was not happy. I noticed the toilet wasn't new, NONE of the drywall seams were even caulked! He removed a doorway to the bathroom, but didn't even paint the broken edges when he placed it back in its original position. It was shabby work, even for a rental property. He took NO pride, whatsoever. At this time, we also noticed that our front door wasn't closing properly, but it did when we had vacated! We recalled him mentioning that he had a problem getting the shower stall in the house, but made no mention he removed the door. When he was questioned about it over the phone, he played the deny, deny, deny game. He stated he didn't remove the door, but he would come take a look at it in a few days when we made arrangements to travel back to the house. When that day and time came, he called us instead of showing up, to tell us that he needed GAS MONEY to come, as well as, additional funds to fix something HE broke. I believe he had no intention of redeeming this situation, and took the cowards way out. It was this same day, we also noticed a nice crack in our "new" shower stall! As you can imagine, $2,550 later we were NOT happy.
We'll never use him again, nor recommend him to ANYONE. He takes advantage of you if he believes you're in between a rock and a hard place. Very dishonest and unprofessional. Renovators BEWARE of James Puerile Jr.!
