Edward Hotaling Mason/Carpenter/Chimney Repair

Mr Hotaling came at no charge to assess the cause of our chimney leaking into a bedroom. He climbed up to inspect it from the top and and inside the house, and identified it as compromised flashing and badly deteriorated mortar around the top, most likely due to our removal of ivy. We discussed the options for repairing the flashing, and he agreed to take the conservative approach of caulking the existing patinated copper rather than replacing it. He repaired the cap and mortar, chunks of which were missing or loose. He returned to do the job when weather permitted, and spent the good part of the day on top of a ladder wielding a small power saw to remove loose mortar and then a trowel to re-mortar the stones. The result was magnificent - preserving the reveal on the stonework. There is no sign of the repair, which is the best result.  I would have no hesitation in recommending him for chimney work or any stone masonry.
