Central A/C - Gas - Service/Repair
We have been dealing with Stan Gelber and Sons for at least 25 years without any problems until this year (2025) when we called for our seasonal a/c spring tune up and was given the price for the job. When the service tech was finished with the job we were given a bill for more then was quoted on the telephone without any additional reasons for the additional price as there was no parts that were needed. When we called to question the amount we were told that was the price and there was NOTHING they could do. Sorry Stan Gelber but you have lost a customer after 25 years

New ownership is INCOMPETENT. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Came it and "fixed" two ac units. Except they didn't. Scheduled a another visit. They canceled at the last minute. When i called to discuss the situation the woman loterally refused to let me say a word, rescheduled for a time that doesn't work for us, and HUNG UP ON ME. when i called back she accused me of yelling at her and crying, neither of which happened, i literally just tried to tell her what was going on. Obviously she didn't want to hear it so she tried to haslight me. Unbelievable. Whayever you do, STEAR CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY.

Big problem.....No emergency service available on Friday night through Monday morning. They installed a very expensive boiler which sprung a large leak early Saturday morning. It flooded and ruined our finished basement (over $10,000. in restoration) and although I had a maintenance a contract with the company, I could not reach them when I needed them. Emergencies can occur any day of the week and they lack appropriate coverage. They have no emergency answering service, which we recommended several times.

They're so good. We used them from oil to gas conversion services several years ago and I was so impressed with them which is why I hired them again. They arrived within the time frame provided. They're great and the best contractors I've had.

This was our second time using Stanley Gelber & Sons, Inc. We will 100% use them again for our maintenance, or any issues we come across with our HVAC system. They are total pros and great at what they do. I would not consider using anyone else. I highly suggest using them if you have any issues with your system.

I hired Stan Gelber & Son to install a new furnace, humidification system, and HEPA filtration system on the furnace and two other units in the attic. The unit was a steam humidifier which brings water into the unit, heats it into steam which then goes through the ductwork when the humidistat calls for humidity. During the first week, my thermostat showed that the temperature in the house was reading about 80 degrees, when I was calling for low 70s. . However, my thermostats in the house showed extremely low humidity- only about 22%. The guy who came did not really give me any information on what had gone wrong, but that it was “electrical”. Well, things then went from bad to worse. The humidistat kept registering over 60% humidity coming back into the ductwork, the humidification unit did not appear to be running and my humidity in the house itself was down to low 20s. Visit number two. The guy who came said that while “some” humidity was being sent through the ductwork, it appeared most of it was making a loop and simply going back into the return. Mr. Gelber suggested at that point that they take the humidistat off the unit and place it upstairs in the house. He wanted to charge me an additional $300.00 for that work. There was no attempt to find out why the reading in the return was so high, and no one checked out the unit itself to see if it was even operating when humidity was being called for, or why all the humidity seemed to be going into the return and not the house. It should have been obvious that it was the first place to troubleshoot, and that if all the moisture was going back into the return and not going through the ductwork into the house that moving the humidistat was not the answer. I finally called a different company for an opinion. It turned out that , the humidification unit was not signaling the furnace blower when humidity was being called for. In other words, the unit was not even operating. Whatever the first guy did concerning the electric problem he said existed, the second guy made it worse and screwed it up so that the unit was not even operating on demand.I In addition, as per the manufacturer of the steam unit, who I spent lengthy amounts of time on the phone with, the humidistat was supposed to be at least five feet upstream from the humidifier, and it was not. The humidistat was picking up on all the moisture in the unit which was not being pumped through the system, which was why the reading was so high. I hired the second company to remove the unit and put in a pass through unit, which I have had no issues with. Brian Gelber really should have looked into the reason the unit was not even operating and sending humidity through the house instead of trying to soak me for extra money for a procedure which would have accomplished nothing, and possibly led to damage in my basement from leakage and/or flooding. The steam unit, BTW, was so corroded that there were pieces of broken metal lying all over it and tons of calcification from the water which just sat there. The inside had cracked and corroded so that it looked like it was decades old instead of merely about six months. When I told him he really should reimburse me for the humidification system as well as for half the yearly contract I paid him for, since I did not feel I wanted him to do any further work in the house, he was willing to return “some” money if I signed a non-disclosure promising I would not tell anyone, would not post on social media, write reviews, etc. He even sent me a copy of what he wanted me to sign along with the letter telling me what he expected in return for a refund. Something tells me he would have a lot more negative reviews but people are taking his “deal” to shut up in order to get some money back. I felt it was more important to warn people about this company. A photo of the corroded steam humidifier is shown below They also installed two HEPA filtration systems on my attic units which are way too small ( he insisted the area was too small to warrant larger units) and as a result I have dust everywhere because the units to not clear it all out. They now need to be replaced. A very disappointing experience, not only because there seems to be a lack of knowledge on how this unit was supposed to work and therefore the inability to troubleshoot it on the part of this company , but because they seem to want to keep charging extra if there is an issue when the initial price of thousands of dollars should have assured me of a working unit without additional charge. I am also out the money for the unit and its installation as well as the money for part of a service contract, but then I had to pay someone to remove it and install a new system as well. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Billy, a Stan Gelber technician, came and identified the leak in our system. Other providers had not found one. Billy explained everything very clearly, showed the leak, and explained our options. We are thankful for his expertise and kindness.

Jordan Gelber came to quote the job. He was very courteous, friendly and professional. He recommended and quoted a Carrier system. After speaking with a couple of other companies (one of which never responded in a timely manner (rated well here) and the other one who quoted me on what would have been a nightmare (and at a higher cost) - I knew I wanted to use Gelber & sons for installation. The only thing I struggled with is when I did my due diligence on the system - I kept coming back to Mitsubishi. I found many negative reviews for Carrier. In fairness - there were a number of references to the critical importance of proper installation of these systems - so, it is possible there are too many unqualified installers out there. After a pleasant and respectful follow up conversation with Jordan (who stood by his recommendation of Carrier), I asked to be quoted on a Mitsubishi system (Gelber and Sons are Mitsubishi Diamond contractors - which gets you an extra 2 years on the warranty). Jordan got the new quote to me quickly . After further due diligence, I signed a contract to have Gelber & Sons install the Mitsubishi system (it was more expensive than the Carrier system). I was put on the installation schedule to have the system installed 2 weeks later. I got a call a week ahead confirming the appointment. The first day 3 Gelber technicians (Oscar, Mario and I'm sorry I forgot the 3rd installers name) showed up on time. The team was quick, clean (they actually brought sheets in to cover the floor/furniture below the interior work they did!!) and professional. They had the system (1x42k btu condenser and 5 (1x18k, 1x12k, 1x9k and 2x6k) interior units installed in 2 days - including running electric and 1 of the a/c lines through the attic. They were about an hour late the second day (it was a Saturday). They did accidentally put a small hole in one of my bedroom walls which they took the time to carefully repair. It has only been a couple of days, but in those days the system has been working like a charm. I am not easily impressed by contractors, but have to say I was very impressed with the Gelber & Sons team. They are very deserving of the high ratings they have here and elsewhere. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again or recommend them to others looking for similar work.

If you don’t like throwing your money away. DO NOT NOT NOT USE THEM. Almost 4 years ago we spent a fortune putting in a brand new Lennox central ac from scratch. Over $11,000. They put the outside unit on a prefab slab that was way too short and it’s coming off because of vibrations. When they installed it we brought it to their attention and they said it would be fine. Fast forward to this year when I called them to set up a start up service call. In the meantime we had a heatwave and the unit wasn’t working correctly. I called them back and now the service call became an emergency call and instead of $139 it was now $189 and they couldn’t come for 2 weeks. It’s $50 more and their emergency was 2 weeks away. Whaaat!!!! I had no choice to hire another Hvac company to repair it quickly. We need A/C for medical reasons. I left the appointment for today for the general service and for the new pad they said they were going to install at no charge. I called them yesterday to let them know I would no longer need the service call just the new pad. They never came with the new pad and I spoke to Mark the service manager today. He was so nasty and told me he wasn’t going to give me the pad or honor his original promise. I recommended Gelber to a friend of mine who will never use them now. He said putting in a correct size Slab was a favor. Excuse me. I paid them over $11,000 for a brand new install and all I wanted is a proper fitting slab. AND HE YELLS AT ME. DO NOT USE THEM UNLESS YOU HAVE MONEY TO BURN. THEY ARE CROOKS

The work that was done on my old house (1895) upset me greatly. They cracked my plaster ceilings and left a live wire in my 2 year old son's room. The crew failed to clean-up at all, leaving drywall all over the attic and sharp pieces of ductwork on the front porch. This was a complete rushed job, the crew would show up around 10 am and leave by 3pm. I would NOT recommend this company to anyone who owns an old house. Mr. Gelber does not have your best interests at heart. I was fooled and am greatly dissapointed with this company's work.

Top notch service and professionalism. I would hire them again in the future. Strongly recommended. For the estimate, Mike Gelber showed up on time and spent over one hour to determine the best way to change our cooling system. He provided us with various suggestions and quotes based on these options. Because I was not home for the first consultation, I emailed and called Mike to clarify a ton of follow-up questions. He probably spent another two hours total to explain everything again to me. We had to wait about three weeks for them to start the job because the summer is their busy season, and they want to give us three consecutive days to ensure everything can be done smoothly in one shot. The wait was a bit excruciating but totally worthy. The staff spent the first day removing the existing central AC compressor in the backyard, the air handler, and all the duct work in the attic. The installers who came to our house are all very polite, respectful, and friendly. They were extremely careful during the removal process. They put down drop cloth to protect our new hardwood floor that was just installed two months ago. Because our attic has blown insulation, dust was flying everywhere, but they took extra time to vacuum and clean up the house before they leave. If you show up that night, you wouldn't notice there was a major demolition earlier that day. The installation of the new split AC system was completed on the following two days smoothly. They made sure to discuss with us in detail about where to hang the cooling unit in each room and how the pipes would be set up around the house. The hide covers were done nicely with precision and high quality craftsmanship. The installer even gave me some tips of how to drill holes and hang things on the wall. The installers also tested the water drains out the unit properly and all units are running effectively before they leave. They took care of all the paperwork required by our town for a building permit and electrical inspection for this job. They also filed the PSEG rebate form for us. We felt very at ease throughout the entire process because of the prompt feedback from the company and the professionalism all their staff have. We are very happy with the service and product we receive, and we highly recommend them to everyone.

I had my old central ac replaced with a new unit which costed me $7200. During the installation, they find a copper pipe that was damaged bc of a recent roofing job that was done. (I am guessing that this is why my old unit was not working and if I fixed this, I didn't need a new ac.) After the one day job was complete, I get a bill for another $600 to repair the copper pipe. I was not told during the contract signing or when they found the copper pipe that there would be an extra charge, I tried to reason with them but they said that they will void my warranty and not process my rebate if I don't pay. I feel like I'm paying for a new ac unit AND paying for a repair job for my old unit. Very, very disappointed with Stan Gelber.
Response from Stanley Gelber & Sons Inc
"This customer called us for an estimate to replace their central air conditioning system that they said was no longer working. Our salesman asked the customer what problems the customer was having and they stated that the condenser had stopped working and the unit needed to be replaced. Because we have not seen the previous equipment since 2009, the sales representative accepts the homeowners description of existing problems. It is clearly noted on the customers signed contract with Stanley Gelber & Sons that we will be connecting a new system to their existing duct system and refrigeration piping. We installed, at no charge, a temporary loaner condenser but found that there was a severe refrigerant leak in the system and the loaner would not cool the house. We rearranged our installation calendar to accommodate the customers need for cooling and installed their replacement system the following week. During the installation, it was found that a copper refrigerant line had been damaged by a recent roofing repair this customer had. Our installation manager notified the customer of the damage caused by the roofer and that there would be a charge for the repair so that the system would work. Both the installation manager and salesman of this project advised the customer that this is something he should be going after his roofer for reimbursement. Refrigeration systems are pressurized to very high levels and when a line is punctured the compressed gas and oil escapes with a lot of noise and oil vapor so it is very obvious that the roofer knew he damaged the lines but kept his mouth shut and did not inform the homeowner. The homeowner is holding us responsible for damages caused by another trade, but we stand behind our work and will be processing all rebates and guarantees are in force."

Installation went very smoothly. Crew arrived promptly as promised and duration of the work was what they had estimated to be. Jordan Gelber was very professional and responsive - what a delight to deal with. The whole crew was polite and respectful of our home - laid out plastic sheeting on work areas so as not to damage or make the hardwood floor dirty and cleaned up everything both inside and outside the house when work was completed. Office staff was professional and helpful when I called with some questions post-installation. I have obtained three other estimates before meeting with Jordan and their price, although not the lowest, was reasonable. But what sold me to them was (1) the good reviews I read in Angie's List, and (2) Jordan Gelber's professionalism and pleasant demeanor. I rely heavily on reviews, whether it's a product or service and who wants to deal with a pushy salesman. I highly recommend Stan Gelber & Sons Inc. Thanks for a job well done and hope we have no issues with the unit for many years.
