The Solution: Wayne Jr. came by to explain the job, gave an estimate, explained that 30 year old tanks were well built and most likely would be ok. Within a few days he got the necessary permits, started the job and hand dug it out without destroying the
roots.
His four person crew was understanding, friendly and hard working. Wayne was on site for the inspection ? no leakage ? and the hole was filled the next morning. Final invoice was the same as the estimate.
Barrier is a small, family owned and operated company. Wayne and his crew adopted me into the family and responded to my fears of major contamination and a dead red maple.
"Thank you [member name removed]. It was a pleasure to work with you. Please keep Barrier in mind for any future tank removals."
"Hi [member name removed], I'm happy everything went so smooth. Please let me know if you need anything else in the future."
I went through interviewing 2 contractors highly recommended from Angies list. Both were very qualified to do the job but for me I just got a better vibe from Wayne Sr. regarding his communication style, easy demeanor, confidence in the work to be done and being a man of his word. Sometimes it all boils down to who you feel will work with you better on something as critical as removing an oil tank and possible correction of any soil contamination. Wayne also has a lot of experience with tank removals from many gas stations in the area so addressing home removal is much more straightforward and simpler to address all in all.
The other thing Wayne offered which the other contractor did not is the "hand dig" option for another $300. This is basically a manual cut up and removal of the tank without use of an excavator. For us, given the tank was very close to our foundation and in a middle of a garden this was a nice option to have! Wayne said "you will barely know we were here" and he was right! There was very little disruption to the surrounding area, no excavator tracks digging up the lawn and the guys did a great job removing the azaleas and hosta in nice clumps so we could replant them temporarily till done.
As I noted above, sure enough I had a leak! (d***...) Two small perforation holes in a 25 year old tank that i personally tarred with roofing cement when I first built the house and buried that thing. I was in shock but Wayne and his son Wayne Jr. just gave me a calm feeling that they would handle it and they sure did. Wayne Sr. decided to try hand digging out the contaminated area and sure enough that was all that was needed (lucky for me). So don't wait! Just get your tank out of the ground asap. Wayne took care of all the paperwork, lab tests, etc. afterward and kept me posted.
The extra plus mark I will give Wayne is coming through for us in fixing up our basement floor what was scratched up from the new tank being dragged over the commercial vinyl tile i installed earlier this year. He was NOT happy seeing that his team did this and immediately said to me "we will fix this". I offered to find a local floor guy to fix the scrapes and rebuff the floor. Wayne agreed andd paid for the ENTIRE basement floor getting rebuffed. No argument, no negotiation. To me that speaks a LOT about the integrity of Wayne and his approach to working with his customers.
Lastly the only B mark I gave the team was around punctuality and follow-up. I had to make a few calls to Wayne through the project to find out when they would show up next and what next steps were. Wayne mostly answers his calls and if I got his vmail would call me back later in the day. I would suggest you just call every once in awhile to keep things aligned and moving.
Wayne (and Wayne Jr.) - It was pleasure working with you both! My friend is already asking me for your number to do his tank next.
