He measured the 2 bedrooms and hallway for installation of flooring. We ordered the flooring according to his measurements.
He sent us to Lumber Liquidators to purchase product. We special ordered flooring to match color of floors in upper level of home and on staircase.
We had recently installed electric baseboard heat to replace forced air heat that was not efficient under the slab on our lower level. I asked that the vents be covered as they were no longer necessary. When I came home during the flooring installation they had cut holes in one of the bedrooms for the vents. This was a bummer but the bed in the room covered the vent, so we settled and said please cover the vent in the other room. It became increasingly difficult to communicate with Charlie. They were supposed to come on certain days but cancelled. Charlie's helper was a perfect gentleman and knew his craft well. This was appreciated.
At the conclusion of the job for hall and bedrooms we had several boxes of expensive flooring left over? Charlie said that we bought too much. The flooring was only returnable with a 20% restocking fee. We purchased the amount of flooring that he told us to. This was very disappointing. What would we do with the flooring to avoid hundreds of dollars of restocking fees?
On the same level of the house, we also have a family room that we installed laminate flooring ourselves a few years prior, so we settled on and purchased a little more flooring and had them install the extra in that room. In addition we bought threshold pieces that I stained myself. There were 4 areas total that the threshold would be installed on. Charlie gave us a quote of another $400 more to install that room. We were not happy with the price as we felt a major error had been made on his part. However we were stuck and moved forward.
Back to the thresholds. They were glued down and heavy weights put on top of them for several days. Once all was complete Charlie then added $100 for shoe molding in the family room. I asked for an itemized receipt which Charlie was not able to provide. This project was taking a very long time and our house was in complete disarray and the holidays were approaching.
The quote was on 10/24, first installation completed on 11/18 and the final room (that was not in original quote as stated above) was finally completed on 12/11. This was 7 weeks of having our furniture scattered all over the house. We understand that jobs can be delayed in other areas and therefore delay our job, however the communication was not going too well. The cost of the flooring was $3700 with installation at $2500.
Fast forward one year later and now one year and 5 months later. 2 of the thresholds have come lose and need to be reglued. After several texts and a voice mail we have not heard back from Charlie. We just want to put the thresholds back down. There is concrete showing under the flooring and looks awful, not to mention we trip on the area daily.
I even called our general contractor who recommended Charlie and evidently Charlie said the thresholds are "junk" and will pop off all the time and that he is not coming back here". Really!? So why did he use that product??
This is a lesson learned to get more than one quote on a job and check references. Hopefully we will get the thresholds back down. The old glue looks like it needs to be sanded before they can be reinstalled. This is not our expertise but somehow we will figure it out. Our GC said he will come and hopefully secure them. Thanks Mark, but no thanks for Charlie!!
"Wow this is a shock to me. We bent over backwards for her. She changed her mi d all along the way including the heat vents. I didn’t know she changed the heat and thought the whole time the vents were being used. She ordered her own product not me. She bought the transitions. Her floor is concrete and it was not level and we didn’t know any [Member Information Removed] this until the carpets were pulled after I looked at the job. Also we stay on the job from start to finish and never split the job up into different weeks or days. 30 years [Member Information Removed] doing floors and not one unhappy customer until now. This is an example [Member Information Removed] someone being able to write a review that is not true."
They're an A all the way!! Charlie refinished 2 of my floors and did an excellent job. He also stopped the floor from squeaking and left the job site cleaner than when he arrived. When he says "no dust" he means it.
This is the third time I have used his services and I have always been happy with his work and his prices.
"Thank you. It was our pleasure. Keep us in mind for future projects. Call us with any questions. Thanks again Charlie"
