Previously I was having a difficult time getting into the shower, by removing the bathtub and replacing it with a shower only with a considerably lower 'step' from approximately 14 inches to approximately 4 inches. We also considered a 'walk in style' bathtub which would have cost the same as the total conversion for the walk-in only!
Since there is no body in my household that uses the bathtub this was a great idea and I certainly appreciate their professional expertise they laid down plastic runners to walk over, supplied their own trash cans and continually cleaning (the must have been Boy Scouts- they left the area in better shape than it was when they arrived!
The gentlemen showed up between 8:30 am and 9:00 am. The first bathroom was done at 2:00 p.m. and the second at 4:30 p.m. Matt did one bathroom and Cliff did the other bathroom.
We are just 24 hours from completion, so have not used them yet, but they look wonderful.
THE SALES EXPERIENCE
The Sales Person was very personable, very knowledgable, and we enjoyed speaking with him. He guided us through our options and was obviously well versed with respect to what BathFitter provided.
As a heads up, as part of BathFitter's sales strategy, they offer a significant discount if you decide at the time of the free quote to contract them to do the work. Be prepared to say yes when you invite them over. You may want to get the other contractors in first so that you can perform your quote comparisons on the spot. I think it would be less of a pressure sale if we were given a 3 day window within which to decide, but that's how it is in the sales business. Just be prepared.
THE FINAL COST
With the discounts provided, we believe that we got a good price on this bathroom. Not sure how much further they would have been willing to go to get our business. At this time, there is not much research within Angie's List with respect to Bathfitter's pricing. We ended up paying $5000 when all was said and done. We completely removed our old tub and tore down the walls to the studs. It was a complete bathtub remove and replace. This also included replacement of all immediate plumbing, including the old Cast Iron elbow that was there since the house was built in 1955.
We gave a B with respect to Final Cost only because we did not have anything to really compare it to, therefore, we believe we did good (not excellent) with respect to cost. Over time, as more members post their experiences and costs with BathFitter, we will be able to see more clearly how we did in comparison to others who used them.
THE JOB
Let me start out by saying, I am so glad I did not attempt to do this job myself. I have had people tell me that I could save money by doing this job myself. All I have to do is go to the Home Depot and buy the Tub-insert etc. and put it in. Now I know they are nuts :). Anyone who attempts this job without a certain degree of experience performing tub replacement and plumbing should seriously think twice. Especially if you plan to use the bathroom in the near future.
The two service reps that came over were very knowledgable, very personable, hard working, and it was obvious that this was not their first and quot;rodeoand quot;. They clearly explained what they were doing as they did it, did not mind me hanging around asking questions as they worked, and obviously knew exactly what they were doing.
They started with the demo work. Down came the tiles, walls, etc. Then out went the tub. This part surprised me and I would probably still be attempting this phase of the job if I did it myself. They took a big sledgehammer to the old cast iron tub and broke it into pieces. The whole house shook. If I did this myself, I would have had my friends over to help me remove and carry it out of the house. I never would have considered breaking it into pieces.
Anyway, long story short, these guys did everything we asked and went the extra mile to be sure we would be happy with the final product.
For Example:
1. Instead of taking the easier path of cutting the front of the tub to fit over the existing floor, they did as I asked, and removed six inches of the floor in front of the tub and then built a landing in front of the base of the tub. Now, in the future, when I finally get around to replacing the floor, I can pull up the landing, pull up the old floor (without having to go under the tub) and put the new floor to the edge of the tub.
2. They found a large extra piece of the new tubwall, cut it to fit so that it would cover a portion of the bathroom wall that was not even part of the tubwall. It just made the whole tub installation look nicer with respect to the final product.
These little extra effort tasks made it clear that our interests were their primary concern and they were willing to do whatever it took (within reason) to make sure we were happy with the final product.
TIME
They showed up right on time, worked straight through the day, and were finished between 4-5pm. Maximum, they were in the house 8 hours. We were bathing by the following morning.
SPECIAL MENTION
BathFitter has a special relationship with Austin Plumbing. The Plumber from Austin Plumbing was easy to get along with and obviously knew what he was doing. I had an extra task for him in another part of the basement where a slight leak had formed over our time in the house. He looked at the job, provided us with a quick and reasonable quote, and had all the work done before we knew it.
THE ONE CONCERN
With the new accessories, we find that we are going through water at a much more rapid pace. Where we used to get four showers out of our 50 gallon hot water tank, we now get two. We had mistakenly assumed that the tub faucet we ordered would also come with volume control capability, not only hot and cold. This is something we will be discussing with BathFitter to see if there is anything they can do for us. I will see if I can't post back later to let you know how it all turns out.
CONCLUSION
The whole experience was a very good one. BathFitter did an excellent job. From the sales experience through to the moment they walked out of the house after the final installation, they exemplified professionalism and a mastership of their respective fields. We are very happy we used them to do our Tub Replacement.
