Lee called me on a Sunday morning (we had spoken briefly a few days earlier), and said he could paint my vacant rental apartment that very day as he would be busy with other jobs later in the week. He gave me a price of $400 over the phone for one coat of paint on the areas that I wanted painted. I re-arranged my schedule so that I could buy the paint, get the cash for his fee, and travel to Brooklyn to let him into the building. He showed up on time with a partner who said he was Lee's father, as I recall. I gave Lee his $400 fee and left shortly afterwards as I had other business in Pennsylvania that day.
A few hours later Lee called me to tell me that the one coat of paint did not cover very well in some rooms since I had changed the color with respect to the new paint. He wanted to paint a second coat in two of the rooms. He was rather insistent that I let him do a second coat although I told him I understood the situation, and that it would be okay. Finally, I relented and told him to go ahead and do the extra coat and we agreed on the price he wanted which was $150. He wanted me to pay him the $150 immediately for the additional work via Western Union. I told him I could not do that as I was out of state, in the middle of other business, and not familiar with the payment process via Western Union. I told him I would meet up with him the next day as I understood from our earlier conversation that he would be doing a job in Manhattan. He insisted that Western Union be used so I told him I would pay him by using Western Union around noon the next day (Monday). Lee called me back that same afternoon to tell me that he had to go buy another gallon of paint to finish the job. I told Lee I would send an additional $50 because of this. He also said there would be extra paint left over which he would leave for me. But he did not leave any paint for me. He did leave me a clean, but empty 5 gallon bucket which was a different Home Depot bucket than the one I had brought to the apartment with the paint in it.Lee called and texted me around noon the next day for a Western Union confirmation number just as I was sending him the additional funds via Western Union. Western Union charged me a $20 fee to use the service. It took what seemed like a half hour to receive from Western Union the confirmation number for the money transfer. Once I received it, I passed it along to Lee, who confirmed to me that he had received the funds.
Lee was aggressive in getting me to let him do the work that very day, on Sunday - although I could not be present on the job. Likewise, in persuading me to let him do the additional work for $150. I understand that it is important to be aggressive to bring work into your business. But frankly, as our dealings progressed, I got the feeling (rightly or wrongly) that Lee was then in dire need of money immediately.
The quality of the painting work itself, I would characterize as fair. Some areas needed to be filled in with a brush. Unfortunately, the painters were very sloppy. Way too much paint wound up on the floors, hallway mirror and fixtures. This cost me a great deal of time and effort to clean up as best as possible. Probably longer than the painters spent actually painting in the apartment. I can understand being left with a mess if I had left a bunch of college students alone to paint the place, but Lee had told me he had 25 years of experience. Lee assured me he would be covering the hardwood floors. Then, to just go home and leave the mess was completely unprofessional. When Lee did the work, he knew that I had other apartments that would need painting from time to time. However, given these circumstances, I definitely will not be using this company ever again.
The job was completed by 2 guys in 3 days. Since basically the entire house was being painted, it was nice that they worked with me to do one area at a time so it would be less inconvenient for me and my family. They arrived on time (1/2 hour late one day, no biggie). I had purchased the paint in advance but when we ran out of one color, they went to Home Depot and got more for me. I used different colors in every room and they all came out really nice - it looks very professional and I have gotten compliments from everyone who has seen the paint job. I was concerned that I would end up with paint on my carpets and floors but Supreme covered everything really well. Of course I had to sweep and vacuum after they were finished but I would do that after any work was done in my house.
Considering price, quality and speed/convenience I think they did a very good job. They were respectful and courteous and overall I am very happy. I would recommend Supreme Painting to anyone looking for an affordable paint job that looks like it cost a lot more.
"we dont remove carpet. i have never done work for this man."
