When I called the owner, he said that it just needed another (third) coat...which would cost an extra $200. That was extremely disappointing.
In the end, after the additional coat at the additional cost the floors came out looking nice. In my opinion though, the job should have been done right the first time for the agreed price.
This is my first commendation as a member of Angie's list because I wanted to applaud the excellent work provided by Galaxy. This company needs to be recognized as truly professional, customer-focused and extremely reliable. There aren't enough good things that I can say about this company. I wish them all the best going forward. They not only restored my floors but restored my faith in quality workmanship as well. There are too many unscrupulous contractors out there........we, the consumers, need to compliment and direct our fellow consumers and neighbors to companies like Galaxy Hardwood. Thank you, Louie for a job well- done. They deserve and have earned an A+++ rating as far as I am concerned and I AM VERY CRITICAL WHEN IT COMES TO QUALITY!!!!
After getting a few quotes to refinish hardwoods I went with Galaxy because even though they weren't the cheapest, they were able to start the soonest and they had done a good job on the floors at my parents house a few years back.
My initial quote for approximately 400 SF of hardwood floor + stairs/landing was $975.
Guys showed up on time, I let them in and I left to go to work. They were to sand and put the 1st coat on the first day and come back the day after to do a second coat.
After the work was complete and I gave the area 48 hours to dry, I came back to find a floor that looked worse than it started. It was very patchy - glossy in some areas, dull in others. It was not smooth. Surface stains on the stairs were not sanded out.
I called the owner to tell him I was very disappointed and he claimed that the old pine floors just needed another coat and that he could come back and do it for $195. I was skeptical but had no other choice.
In the end I am happy with the product. The third coat is what was needed. However, I am very disappointed in the fact that they had to come back and charge me more to complete the job. The $975 quote was basically for an incomplete job. I expect a floor guy to know his floors and know what will be required to complete the job.
Additionally, I was a slightly disappointed with their cleanliness. I was asked to provided about several contractor garbage bags for them to put sawdust in and was responsible for disposing of it. Of course it's a dirty job, but saw dust remained on base moulding, as well as all over the porch and front steps. A quick sweep would have went a long way. Polyurethane was splashed on white trim moldings in spots throughout - I planned on repainting it anyway, but they didn't know that. All that being said, if the job was done right the first time, I probably would have overlooked these issues.
