This roofer accepted older, poor conditions shingles and refused to exchange them at the our request (homeowners) necessitating a claim being filed with Owens Corning for poor shingles. Then once on our roof we no longer had any say. We asked for padding between the ladders and the edge of our house to lessen damage to which the roofer said, "I will fix any damage to your house at the end" rather than buffer the constant load against the house as they went up and down the ladders with shingles. And when they left, sure enough new shingles along the edges of the house where their ladders were had been damaged. Then we found them putting the Grace ice and water shield on wrong as well as the drip guards with the ice and water shield- not within manufacturer's specifications. They did then begin to do it the way we wanted according to manufacturer's specifications, but Matthew the roofing contractor/owner began threatening to walk off the job, threatening to go to court, requested more funds though he was paid half upfront as the contract specified and half when the work was done. We did not pay him anything further and assured him he would be paid if he did the job. His partner slipped on the roof and cut his leg, necessitating a half day lost of work, one less worker on the roof (now down to three) and more threats from Matthew to walk off the job that "this job is cursed." From 9/7 to 9/10 they managed to take all the shingles off the house, grace shield the front and three dormers on the front and put new shingles on approximately 1000 square feet of a 3900 square foot roofing job. On 9/10/10 I arrived hom at 5:15 to find no roofer, the back of the house tarped with nothing on it underneath, 2/3 of the front shingled minus the three dormer windows. All the supplies remaining on the pallets on the ground were gone as where all their supplies. It was obvious Matthew had walked off the job and had not talked to either my spouse or myself. He returned a call the next day saying he had had it, he was the roofer and we weren't, and as far as he was concerned we had broken the contract because we wanted him to do the remaining work within manufacturer's specifications so as not to void the warranty or our claim regarding the shingles (which he had agreed to the night before). As far as he was concerned, "it was a wash, but if you want to go to court I guess I will go after the rest of the contract. And oh by the way one of my ladders left at your house the night before is damaged." What? When I pointed out the damage to the shingles from his ladders he once again said he fixes at the end of a job whatever he damages to a home- but he walked off this job and didn't fix what he damaged. I wouldn't recommend this roofer who feels the homeowner has NO say once they are on your roof, who was threatening to walk off the job and go to court from day one, who did little work in a four day period, and who departed from the job with supplies we paid for and without any notice leaving us high and dry. I also spent a great deal of time trying to appease him and run interference between he and my spouse for two days.
