He seemed to be in a rush. He had pushed open my front door, breaking my lock, which I hadn't realized until later.

I own a small apartment building and gave Maurice a "To Do List" with several small jobs. He completed the assigned tasks in a reasonable amount of time and with minimal supervision. I would not hesitate to hire him again and would highly recommend him to family and friends.

Maurice is simply terrific. He was punctual, professional, kind, and courteous in demeanor--all important qualities to my ninety-year-old mother. He worked with her by his side at important points in the project to make certain that the railings were an exact fit for her. He developed an efficient and attractive design to meet the challenge of the project. He estimated the time and cost of the project perfectly, and was in regular communication with me (I hired him from CT for a project in NY) to make certain that my ideas were taken into account and my hopes for the project were being met. Simply a perfect job all around.

AWESOME! I am the type of person who like to do things myself because no one else takes as much care in doing things in my house as I do. Maurice is the exception. He is the one person I have had do repairs & painting when I have not had the time to do it myself. Sometimes it take a conversation or two for us to both be on the same page but he take great pride in the work he does am I have not been disappointed. We have used him a few times and will continue to hire him in the future!

Maurice has been a wonderful find on Angie's List! I have hired him on several occasions since 2012, for some carpentry and painting. I am always delighted in the way he carefully thinks out a project, and then offers the very best solution! He is one of the MOST honest, reasonable, courteous, dependable handymen you will ever find.
When I contacted him for a very special project, an art installation around 2 patio pillars, he eagerly researched and ultimately applied just the right skills to accomplish the task!
I would highly recommend him to all my friends; while he's quite busy most of the year, Maurice somehow manages to get to your project in a timely manner. From returning your initial contact to final follow up, this guy's the only one I'd call!

Maurice pre-cut crown molding too short and told me that he was not comfortable installing the molding as he didnt have the proper nail gun; even though Maurice told me that he was a master carpenter. I also had to purchase another $65 piece of molding that I believe he improperly cut. The mudding was not done well or completely in garage, closet, and bedroom; and some of the caulking was very sloppy. Maurice also tried to charge me for time that he did not work. When I confronted him about the issues he stated it was correct and then the next day said he made an error. After the job was complete I noticed that the base board was marred in some areas from the nail gun. The corner round didnt cover it and I emailed him to ask what could be done. He said he really didnt have any ideas what to do about the molding and offered no assistance to fix the problem. I hired another company to install the molding but they told me that I would need all new molding because Maurice cut everything too short.I had already spent hours staining each piece.I believe Maurice made mistakes and didn't take responsibility for them and make it right in some way. This has cost me a lot more time and money for an improper job.
12/16/15-Mr. Calis did know about my complaints and as I stated, offered no help and assistance in rectifying the problems. I actually recently ran into him, and again told him my concerns and he said"it's unfortunate that it didn't work out ".
I found that to be a very unprofessional and a cowardly response. People do make mistakes , The difference from a good business man and a poor one, is if they are going to take ownership and make it right for the sake of good business practice and customer satisfaction. You can make some people happy but what happens when things dont go soothly on other jobs. I think ignoring the problems is a very incompetent practice. In good faith, you made no attempt to apologize or offer a solution, personal explanation, or just plain out attempt to make things right,by me.You can write your version as you believe it to be true, but we both know you are not being cpmpletely honest. You can also keep the money Mr. Calis, but guaranteed, this type of business practice will catch up to at some point and you will pay 10 fold. Good luck with that.

Response from MAURICE CALIS
"It’s very common for a customer to express their dissatisfaction with previous contractors, as [member name removed] communicated to me before we started, but I am usually the one to change that trend. So it came as somewhat of a surprise recently to get this complaint, especially since I was never consulted about the apparent issues she now claims were my doing. From the beginning of my involvement, it was understood that my time was limited, as I was extremely booked, but I took her months ahead of schedule as a courtesy. It was understood from the start that she desired each piece to be cut seamlessly from one wall to the other, so that she could apply her own finish. She also required that there be NO NAIL HOLES nor ANY type of wood filler, which is why I never committed to installing them. At no time did I state that I was a master carpenter, however I do have the proper nailers (18ga brad and 16ga finish nailer), to install crown molding NORMALLY. I cut each piece to spec, incorporating a coping cut on one end so that each of them would overlap the other seamlessly. If the contractor she hired after me just put a scrap cut up to align the first piece (as I did when test fitting ALL OF THEM), there would have been no gaps. A coping cut by design covers the start of the next piece. You can’t just put up a piece and say LOOK AT THE GAP. You will never know how it fits until you overlap another piece. So, without being consulted, [member name removed] apparently spent money on new pieces and had the work done. I was never given the opportunity to support this strategy, as she didn’t contact me about it. As to the $65 replace piece or adjusting figures, there was never any dishonesty on my part, as I am always honest with my customers. It’s a situation like this that really makes me appreciate all the wonderful people that I have had the opportunity to work for. Furthermore, I have plenty of customers who can attest to my skill with installing crown molding. In fact a long time customer for whom I just recently installed crown molding has graciously offered her phone number and photos to anyone that desires a reference. I will provide that info upon request."

We were very happy with the work that was completed. Maurice is very thorough, a good problem solver, and tackles each project with the same degree of enthusiasm and attention to detail. He communicates what he is going to do in advance and follows up if his plans change or if he has a better idea of how to approach the project. He works quickly and efficiently. We highly recommend Maurice and will be using him for other projects around our home.

It went well. He had 15 minutes left and he asked if there was anything else he could fix or take a look at. This was the third time my toilet chain broke. Maurice was nice and helpful and tried his best with my tub, but he didn't want to break anything and referred me to a plumber. He was honest about it and told me that he only does minor plumbing, which I liked.

Maurice painted my 11 yr daughter's room. She was very particular and wanted one wall with stripes, one wall made into a chalk board, and 2 other walls a different color. Maurice spent a lot of time making sure it was exactly what she wanted and let her talk his ear off for hours while doing the work. The pink and black stripes were perfectly straight. The room looks much nicer than I ever thought it would. My daughter absolutely loves it!

I've used him several times. There was a period where he was in and out all the time as many things needed fixing. We kept him busy for a while. I thought he was very good and that's why I kept bringing him back. He was reasonable and the quality of the work was good. If there was a problem or something and if something was not working he would be very ingenious in figuring out how to get something to make it work. He is also very hard-working. I mean he comes in and he is like bang zoom from the time he is here until the time he leaves. It takes a while to get him but once you got him on the job then he is very responsive. The reason he is hard to get or to get him to come originally is because he is fairly popular which says something. All contractors are a bit off but he wasn't seriously off.

At first I was not comfortable with his demeanor or his hourly rate ($35/hr) because he didn't appear certain about the problem I was having with the doorknob latch or how to dismantle the defective doorknob and plate -- once he understood what I wanted he did a superb job and my kitchen door now opens, closes and locks perfectly and it matches the color of my deadbolt and other kitchen doorknobs. I found him to be fair, competent and knowledgeable ... and even cute! I believe I would call him again IF he weren't so busy.

Maurice is a pleasure to work with. He works hard and well, but takes the time to be pleasant and affable. He completes every job he starts,
and leaves the site clean. He takes on jobs he has never done, studies them, then invariably performs them well. His painting is excellent.
His carpentry is very good.

Maurice called quickly. He is very busy due to the excellent work and his reputation so it took some time for him to be available, but the work was worth the wait.
He put a lot of thought into customized shelves for a specific purpose and made them work along with existing woodwork in our home and existing cabinets.
He also gave us a lead on a butcher block top (no financial incentive for him) and figured out a way to attach it to a breakfast bar with brackets to add counter space.
Great attention to detail, quick worker (especially considering the quality of the work), reasonable costs and easy to work with.
My wife and I highly recommend him.
