I almost hate to completely pan these guys, but they deserve it today. I've gone there for ~20 years, mostly to get my cars inspected because they're usually quick. I also had quite a bit of body work done there over the years and they did a good job.
However, today I brought my Mercedes in for an inspection, but when I got there I remembered that I had a parking light out. I wasn't sure if that mattered for NYS inspection so I figured I'd just ask first and if so, I'd go fix the light and come back to avoid failing and having to pay anyhow, then paying a second time after simply putting in a bulb. So I ask the "Inspection Guy" and he says to me that NYS Law forbids him from telling anybody what they inspect. WHAT!?!!?! I said, "Really, you kidding me? I just want to know if my parking lights need to be ok to pass." Again, he tells me, "Sorry, I'm not allowed by law to tell you." I say, oh, come on! Of course the owner is right there and says nothing - also protecting against said NATIONAL SECURITY LEAK. I tell them, well, I guess I'll have to go somewhere else then. Nobody tries to explain further, or even ANSWER THE ONE SIMPLE QUESTION to avoid losing a long time customer, so I walk out and leave. They obviously don't give a hoot about it.
So I get home and Google NYS Inspection. Takes me right to an OFFICIAL NYS DMV BROCHURE, right here: http://www.dmv.ny.gov/broch/c-50.htm which states all the equipment which needs to comply for an inspection. I guess Edward Snowden must have leaked this!! Of course I had to print it out and brought it right down to the shop and handed it to the owner. I told him that I had been a long time customer and I was annoyed, but didn't want to cause a scene, so here's a DMV printout of the National Security Secrets regarding parking lights. P.S. they weren't even on the list. I told the owner I thought it was ridiculous they refused to tell me (even if it was some obscure law- which apparently it isn't anyhow). The owner had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO SAY!!! No defense of his inspection guy, no "sorry about the misunderstanding," he just stared at me like he couldn't care less he was going to lose a customer over such stupidity. Plenty of other places around, so I walked out completely dumbfounded. These guys are complete jerks. I'll stick with the great guys at Kessell and A-1 auto body right next door from now on.
