May 2012
In 2011 while the master bath project was wrapping up I had mentioned to the Visca brothers we needed to replace the 20 year old deck and would like to make it somewhat bigger since a nearby tree has now been removed. They responded positively and we discussed some design concepts and material choices. Shortly thereafter they sent a drawing showing deck size and shape and we started discussing details. It was agreed with winter coming we'd wait until the following year.
After weighing material pros and cons and using input from Visca's experience, we decided to build with cedar. In April of this year Visca called and asked if we were ready to build the deck. We said yes, that we had decided on cedar and asked for a final quote. The price came back within a few days and we accepted (having received other quotes previously). Visca was not the lowest bidder but the price was in line with expectations. A contributing factor was past experience and the knowledge the job would be done properly and efficiently.
Shortly after receiving approval they went to work. Key points to note:- pressure-treated footers were set atop concrete supports and bolted in with galvanized clamps, rather than inserted into the concrete. This method will help prevent wood decay.- each plank was pre-drilled and screwed using stainless steel screws. All fasteners were either stainless or double-dip galvanized. These extra touches mean the wood will not split at the screws; screws will not rust away and stain the wood.- floor planks were slightly extended over the edge of the deck to prevent and quot;water trapsand quot; and ultimately, wood decay- the ends of the built-in benches were boxed, which creates a nice visual effect- the edges of the railing were chamfered and posts topped with cedar caps - again, nice visual effects which we didn't even think about or request
All of these factors plus the on-time completion, the fact the job site was cleaned up at the end of each day and all waste materials were removed all contribute to our satisfaction with the project and with Visca Builders.
