My daughter bought a house that had a “new roof” but I saw curling shingles where the garage met the house and called Robert Dates to inspect the roof. I have used Robert in the past and been extremely pleased with the work he has done for me. The prior roof job on this house was a mess, they left some areas of friable sheathing, the shingles were curling and pulling away in areas and the ridge vent wasn’t done properly. We contracted with Robert for a total tear off and new roof. When the job was underway Robert saw where the previous roofer tried to reconnect the original rooted furnace exhaust pipe; it didn’t fit and was not a sealed system. Robert let me know about the problem and went and bought the new pipe while I called Canterbury Chimney Sweeps who came and properly installed it. Robert came back after the roof was finished and hand crafted a “wire mesh window” for the entrance into the attic crawl space in the garage. This will keep critters out and allow more ventilation. Robert makes sure you get a top notch roofing job and takes care of any extra issues that are found during the process. I trust and highly recommend him to anyone who needs a new roof, inspection of a roof or for diagnosis and repair of roof problems.

"always an honor to work with a quality homeowner that understands quality that will stand the test of time with proper quality control at any given moment, as opposed to the good price, punch-it-out contractor that lays a roof down and leaves."

I'm so thankful that I got Bob's number because he took care of me from day 1. Gave me straight answers to all of my questions, no funny business. My roof was started on time and done quickly and when he said it would be done. If anything comes up, I can call Bob and he comes over to check it out. He has great customer service and I would recommend him ten times over. Thank you Bob, you are the best!

Robert was very polite, professional and the communication was great.  His price was very reasonable.  Hopefully, the ice he removed from our roof will make a difference.  Time will tell.  He was very quick in responding to our phone call.

"As I tell all homeowners, you must take the snow and the ice off your house in the middle of the winter so that you do not have a major problem at the end of the winter. Every homeowner in Rochester New York needs to do this. There is no way around the winter."

They were okay. There was one person here doing the work. He came back out twice to finish everything.

"Very few houses that purchase a patch and tune up package can be patched and tuned up. They are too far gone by the time I am called to patch and tune up a poor roof. You, however, caught this at the right time in the right situation."

"I met with you and your husband because you had a severe leak into your living room given to you by a roofing company that I would not hire to finish off my dog house. I am sorry for the problems they gave you and consulted with you and your husband how to remedy this situation. Once again a consultation on how to get out of this problem is much better money spent than thinking that an Angie's List tune up package will correct your financial fiasco. I did all I could to ease your pain of you hiring an inferior company."

"I tuned up you shot full of holes roof as well as I could from the circus act you hired to put it on. I tuned up everyone of your concerns and patched the holes in your porch roof. We showed you exactly what we were doing and why as you hung out the bedroom window watching us. In fact your re-roof (a roof on a roof) is so poor its rotting out your post pillars. The best time for me to help you was 12 years ago when you were hiring the wrong low ball company."

Left provider a message of preferred time. He did not get back to me for at least a month.

When he arrived, he said that all the Angie's list listed services for the deal (sealing cracks, etc) were bogus and he doesn't do them.

Came in and said the whole roof needs to be replaced. Didn't give a needed timeframe, just a high price

and some scare tactics.

Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"I attempted to reach this customer for a month through phone calls and e mails. He finally got a hold of me and we made a date at his convenience. I went out to his home and showed his wife my concerns about the homes they just purchased. I actually took her on the roof and took thorough pictures of what I was finding. I found different roofing materials in different sections of the house, I found shingles ready to blow off, I found a lack of venting. The husband arrived home from work, I took him up on the roof as well and pointed out everything about his roof to him in front of his face. I never suggested that tune ups are bogus, I suggested that his roof was way too far gone to be tuned up. So for his $89.00 he got a complete education on how to go about his roofing project because it will definitely need to happen. In fact the homeowner is so knowledgeable about roofing, he originally called me there to fix a bump on his roof which turned out to be his ridge venting, which turned out to be the only proper thing on his roof."

The job that was performed was excellent.  The errors from previous jobs were corrected  i.e. nailing down the plywood underlayment and the flashing and gutters were replaced.  He kept me informed of every part of the work and any work delays because of weather.  The site was kept very tidy.  He also took pictures of the poor job that was done before on his cell phone which was very helpful.

"Thank you for the review. It was a pleasure working for a customer who knows who to hire and why. One day I'll put you in the truck and you can go along on jobs to point out to other homeowners who just don't get it what they need to do to protect their major investment from mother nature."

"Your roof was right for a tune up. It's approximately a 10 year old roof that benefited from the tune up. Some home owners don't understand that by the time they call me for a tune up their roofs are way too far gone. Thank you"

They would take cash only -- Check I wrote had to be written to Premier Sunroom Solutions --this co. has a bad reputation, & it was a shock to find out they were involved.  It was dishonest and deceptive advertising.  For that reason I would't deal with them again.  My home is a cape cod -- I'm not even sure it was a fair price.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"Thank You for your thought's, First of all [member name removed] paid by check (which is not considered cash in any form) We partnered with premier as they had better availability to provide the materials, labor and special tools required on her particular job,the contract that she signed was with premier, Mark and Robert worked hand in hand with [member name removed] to make sure she got a top notch job and the installation was supervised continuously, The job transformed her house and it looks beautiful. The job was priced fairly and she received a outstanding result. I was left with the feeling to shop around for other quotes, which is what I will do.He did do a good job of explaining issues.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"I did not push for you to get a new roof, I merely explained to you your multi layer roof with the shingles that are blown off and missing will need to be replaced soon. The homeowner actually took me into his basement to show me a leak was coming down his furnace pipe. I did however, tune his roof up as well as possible in accordance to the Angie's list roof maintenance package that the homeowner purchased. I spent a good hour with the homeowner inspecting his roof, his ventilation and his insulation and consulting him on what he needs to do to make his house right as opposed to just slamming a roof on it which I am sure in his quest to shop around he will find a contractor to do just that without addressing the massive ventilation problems he has. Once again, I did not push for you to get a new roof, but your roof which is currently leaking with shingles blowing off and needs to be replaced."

I called because I noticed my roof lifting in a specific area. We just purchased this home and were told the roof was 4 years old.   I purchased a $89 Angie's list deal for roof maintenance.
Robert came out and noticed the spot I called about immediately.  He walked us around and pointed out areas of concern.  Got on roof and took pics of issues.  Emailed me a bid for a new roof for $8,500.  No repairs were done.  He informed us that re roofs are no good and the home owner we purchased from did a horrible re roofing job.  Moisture, rain, snow, etc. is basically going between the old roof and the new roof which is causing the lifting.  Says he sees this a lot.  People selling their homes do the bare minimum repairs to sell the place and then the new owners are left with the actual cost of a new roof. Not much a new home owner can do since re roofs are legal in New York State.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"[member name removed]: Yes most re roofs in Rochester are garbage. They are a terrible investment and I don't sell or install them. I leave that for the lesser professional contractor who works for unknowing homeowners. Sometimes, three roofing contractors would tell a homeowner to re roof it and I will tell a homeowners its a terrible way to go. Therefore, the homeowner will think I'm the contractor who doesn't know what I'm talking about or try to sell them a more expensive job when in reality the re roof contractor makes more money per square footage because they have no overhead of labor or waste or materials (shingles only) and a contractor can make more money re roofing your house than the knowledgeable contractor can doing it right. Yes Lisa you have a four year old re roof on your house with no warranty's and it's a mess. Hope to hear from you soon. Robert Dates"

I knew that we need to have a new roof put on which is why I spent the money on the deal. I thought it would be good to get someone up on the roof to check it before we replace the roof in the spring. Robert discussed the current condition of my roof, pointed out problem areas,  and gave me advice and an estimate for a roof replacement.  He went out on the porch roof, inspected the moss that is there, and gave me advice about what to do. Robert appeared to be very knowledgable and personable, but I do not feel that I spent my money well. I was told that none of the $149.00 that I spent went to the contractor, and that all of the money went to Angie's List.
I have been very satisfied as an Angie's List member until now. I will be wary of purchasing any more Angie's List deals in the future because of this experience. I have spoken with other contractors regarding roof work, and I believe that I essentially paid for an estimate on roof work. It has been my experience that estimates are free.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"[member name removed]: I feel as though the $149.00 spent was a good investment for the knowledge you received on how to proceed with your roof project. For $149.00 you just may not make a multi thousand mistake with a contractor that tells you nothing with a free estimate. The biggest misconception by the homeowner is the free estimate. Believe me Dulcy contractors figure the estimate in the price of the job. I also mentioned that if you do the roof with Monroe Rochester Residential, we can figure a way to rebate the $149.00 that you spent. Free estimates are cheap, however, by the time I left your house you had thousands dollars of advise for $149.00 which is better money spent than having someone squirt caulk all over your roof and tell you your good to go. Hope to see you in the spring. Robert Dates"

Disappointed as what I got could have easily been obtained by contacting a roof installer for free.  Waste of my $149.00.  Disappointed with Angie's listing and the service provider.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"Sir: I came to your house and caulked all your pipe boots, flashings, vent openings and sky lights. I provided the service that was exactly explained to you through Angie's list and before I even got on your house, the service we were going to give you was explained. I continued to explain to you what we were doing as you stood in your yard watching me tune up your roof to the exact specifications that you bought through Angie's list. I assure you sir there is not a roofing contractor in town that would have provided this service not to mention the $25.00 in caulk I used to seal up your house for free. You may be confused over the fact that I told you all three layers of your roof are getting very old and this is the last tune up your roof can use before a new one will be needed. I addressed all your concerns. I delivered professionally on your house in the specs that you bought from Angie's list. I just wish as a contractor there were times that I could rate a customer. I have worked very hard to maintain my A rating with Angie's list and your lack of understanding what your buying and what I have delivered gave me an F with your limited knowledge."

Bob was willing to show me first hand what was needed and the end results. I really appreciated that. I feel like they did a good job. I think the price is about average.

"[Member Name Removed]: It was an honor to have a customer who got up right on their house with me so I could point out every plan of attack as how to go about your roof project and why. As a matter of fact, I took Char up on her roof after the project was completed and shown her a top of the line finished roof project. A few years earlier, [Member Name Removed] did a re-roof (shingles on top of old shingles) [Member Name Removed] learned never to do that again. The re-roof lasted about 5 minutes in house years and she had to redo her roof the right way this time with us. Now she will have 30 years of trouble free roofing. Here is a homeowner that knows whats going on."

Robert came over and explained the condition of the roof. He was very thorough and looked at problem spots. (around chimney and dormer) He inspected the chimney brick as well. He explained what he would do to help the roof breathe and made suggestions about venting the roof better.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"We gave this Angie's list member every bit of tune-up that we could for his Angie's List Fee. Once again, we gave the homeowner not a free estimate but a professional consultation on how he should go about his roofing project in the future and why it needs to be done in a particular way. He is a homeowner that understands a consultation for his money instead of making sure a nail is pounded down. Some homeowners don't understand this."

My husband worked with them and they determined that we needed repair work done. They did give a quote on that service. He liked the guy that came out.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"We tuned up a 6 year old roof as much as a 6 year old roof should need tuning up. If properly installed there is no such thing as tuning up a 6 year old roof. There was however rotted wood at the gutter area that should have been addressed when the roof went on. I showed the homeowner how to make this repair for himself and save money."

he basically wanted to sell me a new roof.
Response from Monroe Rochester Residential
"I performed exactly what the homeowner instructed me to repair. I nailed down loose flashing, secured some shingles, and walked out on a high roof line to knock down a giant hornets nest. I never tried to sell the homeowner a new roof, I suggested that she be prepared for what a home inspector will tell her when she puts the home on the market. That the new buyer will complain about a price for a new roof."
