Extensive delays (at one point we did not hear from the owner or see anyone for 6 weeks). Lots of excuses, but work would only seem to restart once the owner was given more money. Incidentally, we paid more than half up front. A two-month job took 10 months, and we had to do a charge back through our credit card company to have them come and remove large piles of construction debris from the yard and fill in a large open trench. At this point the owner became intimidating in his demeanor, banging on our door early in the morning asking for his money. Complaints were made to BBB and the Suffolk County Building Department, who were able to motivate them to complete the work.

I realize that delays and problems can come up when working with old houses, however, the lack of response to phone calls was inexcusable; I'm not talking hours, but weeks.
