Erin contacted my father in regard to a property we own on Long Island. It is an adorable cottage with a very small yard that belonged to my deceased brother. We visit the property inconsistently as my father is 84 and we live in NH. She stated she was the neighbor and that our property needed a little work. She offered to clean it. She explained that she and her husband "watch out" for the property. At no point did she disclose that she had a landscaping design company. My father was thrilled with her thoughtfullness and offered if there were any fees in dumping the leaves etc he would reimburse her. In the past this has cost around $200. Several weeks later an invoice from her landscaping company for $900.00 arrived. This was the first time we knew she owned a company. The invoice included tree and hedge trimming, general lawn work, and fixing a gate. My father was embarrassed that he had not asked for an estimate and paid her. Last week my husband and I went to Long Island only to find that most if not all of the billed services were not done. It may be possible that the lawn was mowed but hard to tell. It appeared as though the general sticks and brush from the winter were still present. In addition, our chimnea which we normally use to burn the sticks was on Erin's deck. The police said that since we walked over and took our stolen property back there is no case there. I have contacted Erin several times to discuss the fact that the work was not done and that at the very least a partial refund is in order. The gate was off it's hinges and off to one side when we arrived. There were loads of sticks and branches. The hedges were not trimmed. It would seem that $900 of yardwork would be evident. As I said we are willing to accept our mistake for not requesting an estimate however, being billed for work that was never done is unacceptable. She has not returned any of my phone calls. At this point I would caution anyone using the serives of Erin Mclean or her company Aberdeen Design Group. I feel she is a predator on the elderly. In addition to posting on Angie's list we are using the Better Business Bureau to resolve this issue.
