My call was returned promptly. I described the job over the phone and, as expected, it was decided he would charge time and materials. Based on the conversation and the fact that it was a small job, I scheduled him to do the work. He gave me a $65/hour quote for his time which sounded very reasonable, but then he vaguely suggested something about charging for a helper if necessary. That's where I should have asked more questions. In the end I was charged an additional $37/hour for the helper, which brought the total charge to $102/hour. An unhappy surprise. He started a day early, which was fine. He did some nice problem solving and thoughtfully executed the work. There was some disregard to the finished flooring in the bedroom where he was sliding his tools around, but in his defense the area looked like a construction zone. Overall, it was a clean, professional job and I was very happy with the finished product.
