Approximately a year ago we began having an issue with the battery not holding charge. We were told since the car was about 6 years old, it was due for a replacement. This made perfect sense and we happily paid and were on our way.
The car never really seemed to perform a hundred percent, but it did start. The car sat for about 2-4 weeks before the inspection was due. The battery was completely dead and we had to jump start it to get it to the dealer. We told them that they had just replaced the battery a couple of months ago and could they please look into it. Their reaction astounded us. We were told, and quot;Well, we have no idea of knowing how you drove it since you were last hereand quot;.
They could see the mileage the car traveled. It's not like we took it to the top of Mt. Everest! After much arguing and standing our ground, they finally conceded they may not have hooked up the battery correctly. Also, because the battery was dead, a sensor light stays on for about the first 50 miles or so. They had to drive the car around burning up a considerable amount of gas to get the light to go out which in the end, turned out to be their fault (keep reading).
A month or so later, same problem. Battery is dead. We take it back again trying to remain as calm as possible but clearly irritated. They told us the remote start is the most common cause of a battery drain and would have to charge us $250 labor to remove it before they could further assess. This remote start system by the way, was installed by Honda. We were frustrated but wanted the problem fixed so agreed to pay. About an hour later we received a call from them telling us there was good news. The battery they replaced a few months back had a bad cell and was still under warranty. So they replaced it, no charge. We were happy to hear this and our faith in them was restored a little.
Unfortunately, the problem never went away. A few weeks later, same problem. We did email them all of these details above but they never attempted to contact us back. We decided to seek out a reputable mechanic because Honda clearly is not in the habit of employing reputable, professional mechanics. We found Scott from PNS Electronics (for whom we will be writing a stellar review after this one because he was just awesome!) Here we found that there is a known problem with Hondas dating back to about 2003 with their charging systems. They use this technology called ELD (Electronic Load Detection). Essentially, the charging system only kicks in when it detects a significant load on the electrical system. When these begin to fail, the only way to work around the problem is to drive with your headlights always on the the fan blower on high to force an electrical draw so the ELD system will actually charge the battery. Apparently we weren't the first Honda owners to bring this issue into PNS Electronics. A simple Google search would show the same thing:

Clearly this is a known issue. Why did they not tell us about this problem? And here is the ironic catch. Because the car is no longer under warranty, we'd have to pay them to fix it. Not for nothing, Friendly Honda hasn't exactly instilled in us a great sense of trust. Not only was this dealer not helpful in the least, their first reaction was to blame us rather than look into the problem. And it's not even like we are the first to report it. Honda owners everywhere have been complaining about this for quite some time. We will definitely never use this dealer again and we'll have to look to other makers the next time we shop.
The work was done early including the battery replacement they called about to get approval. When we came to pick up the car, they showed us the reading on the old battery and gave us a 10 year guarantee on the new battery good at any Honda dealer in the US.
The price was as agreed plus the new battery.
We got a call the next day to see that everything was OK.
We appreciated the service. Friendly Honda will be our regular service provider for the Fit.
