I initially asked several contractors to bid on the job. Northridge came in with the 2nd highest quote. In the initial bid meeting, when I met with the owner (a plus), he took many notes on his clipboard (another plus), and asked good clarifying questions. Once I selected Northridge, the owner and I agreed on the price, and work began in early March 2013.
On the first day, the owner brought two men to start the demolition of the existing system. That part went well, but when they started to install the PEX pipes, one of the men (who it turned out was not a plumber, by trade) installed the hot and cold water lines one inch above and below an existing electric line - on a floor joist. Also the same person, installed the cold and hot pipes directly to the hot water tank without the 14 inch copper pipes that had been specified. I called the owner and told him that this part of the work was unacceptable, and on the 2nd day, a 2nd qualified plumber arrived, and he spent the morning redoing what was wrong from the first day.
Another problem that cropped up was that my existing 30 gallon cold water tank was to be replaced. When the plumbers installed the new tank, I did not notice until evening (2nd or 3rd day) that it was a 20 gallon tank, instead of 30 gallon. After much discussion with the plumbers and owner, I was given a new 30+ gallon cold water tank. Other issues surfaced, as the work progressed, and I quickly recognized that close supervision, on my part, would be necessary, requiring some haggling with the plumbers and/ or owner,
Generally, the quality of work that the qualified plumbers did appears to be fine - so far (July 2013). The plumbers were prompt to report to work and worked well together.
The reason that my overall experience rating of Northridge is fair is that the owner supplied an unqualified plumber on day one; the owner was difficult to get a response from - when issues surfaced, and I had to remind him on several occasions that either the equipment or work was not what we had specified.
I rated responsiveness bad because the owner was difficult to contact - as already stated, and was not prompt in returning my calls, when issues arose.
I also rated the owner's professionalism bad because he rarely checked up on his plumbers work, unless I called him with an issue. Also, I wasn't sure how to operate the water softener (never had one before) and neither the owner or his primary plumber, was much help. (I had to call the water softener manufacturer for help). Finally, a month or so after the job was complete, I began to have increased silt in my water (even thought a water filter had been installed). I contacted the owner, and asked him to call back and suggest what I should do. He never called back (to this day), but thankfully the softener company helped me resolve a and quot;regenerationand quot; timing issue.
