Great teacher - not a cookie cutter approach but tailored to individual based on age, ability, interest. Very good piano maintenance, including tuning. And when I wanted to upgrade to a better piano, he searched for months to find a used piano in great shape at a fair price. Overall, he is the real piano man!

"Thank you for your kind words. You’re a great student, always doing your assignments in a diligent manner. I was proud to have you perform in the past recitals. I was happy to find an excellent used Yamaha Piano for your home!"

at age 77 decided it was time to learn piano. Searched and found Sal Alfano, The Piano Man. he helped me find and purchase a keyboard. It was in excellent condition and at a fair price. In addition, he has been my teacher for three years. Because of his teaching style, patience and encouragement, sustained forward/upward progress is being made. I value the relationship that we've developed. Sal receives my highest recommendation.

"Your hard work and determination makes you a great student. Keep up the good work!"

Piano estimate, Piano Man was punctual but only spent a few minutes in assessing my piano, stated could not provide me with a written estimate as he was in a hurry and would email it to me. After not receiving anything for close to 1mo, I contacted him to request the estimate. It was to be emailed to me, but after another 2 wks passed, I again requested the estimate - which I then received. However, the estimate had the name of a different model of piano and was very brief in its description.

Piano was nicely tuned at a hefty price but decal work was agreed to be rescheduled for the following week due to the late hour. Sal later cancelled the appointment due to a personal issue and has not responded to my contact to reschedule the decal replacement work. Very dissappointing. Will not call back for future work.
Response from Piano Man
"Mr. [Member Name Removed] and his wife were very pleasant to work with. I appreciated their business. First of all, the price charged was fair because it included not only the tuning, but also many adjustments, which I informed them before they were done. Regarding the decal work, I can understand their feelings about getting the work done. But, the personal issues that happened were: 1. A dear older single friend received the news of cancer with 3 wks to live, with me handling everything. 2. My mother-in-law passed away with Liver Cancer, 2 wks after. 3. I suddenly became my mom's caregiver, because my sister who was living with mom got hit with breast cancer the same month! All my regular customers understood my delay in getting back to them. But, a couple of new customers reacted negatively. I'm sorry for that. I did call and explained the situation. I also contacted another technician to do the work for me, but they hired someone else. If they are willing to accept it, I would be willing to provide a Free tuning for their inconvenience. Thanks again for your business."

The move was flawless. There was a grassy area and many 90 degree turns and twist that needed to be navigated. No damage to piano or home!

Sal exceeded my expectations and brought this piano back to life. He went above and beyond even making repairs on the piano for more than a reasonable price. I wouldn't recommend anyone else.
Response from Piano Man
"It was a pleasure to revive your piano! See you again for tuning! Have a great day!-Sal"

I recently acquired an upright grand dated 1898.  It is a beautiful piano, however, i purchased it not only to display but also to play.  The first person I contacted was not interested in servicing such an old instrument.  After looking through reviews on Angie's List, I was happy to find Sal.

Sal is passionate about his work and is very skilled.  He looked over my piano and recommended the best services to care for it as well as make it produce its best sound.

I am very happy with his service and plan on having him back for my future tunings/maintenance.  He knows what he's doing, is very personable, and reasonably priced for the time/effort/knowledge he invests in the instrument.

I fully recommend him to anyone who wants the best for their instrument.

My piano and how it's used

I have a 1927 Gulbransen Full Upright, about 53and quot; tall. I purchased the used piano from Sal Alfano a few years ago, and it's held up well, especially since many of the parts are still original. He's cared for this piano as it was his own, and it shows in the quality of the piano's voice. The piano is 1-3 hrs per week at this point, including most days of the week by myself and young daughter, playing a mix of easy piano song books and light classical.

Sal's Tuning method

Sal's tuning method is done mostly by ear, the way the traditional European tuning masters have done for centuries. This gives the piano a very individualized tone, that brings its strengths to the front. Much like a good vocal coach can do for a singer, his tuning highlights my piano's rich bass tones and strong middle voice. In my opinion, this is preferable to a more modern tuning method which might use an electronic computerized device to match each note simply to the harmonic scale. Sal's long-time experience as piano teacher, music store expert, and private used piano seller allow him to give both offer both breadth and depth. This is shown in the delight he often takes to play some fun songs at the conclusion of tuning, as well as his ability to do piano repair (action, hammers, pedal mechanics, etc.).

Customer Service

Sal keeps in regular touch to tune my piano twice per year. He makes good use of email, electronic invoices via smartphone, and is easily reachable by phone. I tend to be someone who does lots of research when making a purchase, and think he is one of the best kept secrets of the used piano market in Buffalo. This is especially true for those who want a good piano at a great value. He is kind and humble, a mark of someone who knows there craft, but also when to refer for very technical work (full piano rebuilds or extensive piano furniture refinishing -- he suggested Illos, a multiple generation piano rebuilder and seller ).
