North American Van Lines

This was the only mover that responded promptly and I was in a time crunch so had few options. The quote was high but with no real options convinced myself that it would be worth it for good service from a well known carrier. The guys were prompt, courteous and worked hard at the loading and unloading ends but that's where the good service stopped. They were supposed to bring boxes to put our mattresses in (one was worth several thousand dollars) but they didn't so they used stretch wrap (like food wrap, costing pennies). It pealed off as they were slid around the truck and it rained while unloading exposing the mattress to rain and dirt. I provided bottled waters and vitamin water drinks for them at both ends of the move which were left everywhere for me to clean up. Upon arriving I saw them damage one expensive wood desk by forcing it through a narrow door. When I complained they took the door off but the damage was done and they never replaced the door. After they left it took several days to find things. Heavy trunks clearly labeled "kitchen dishes" were left in the downstairs garage (close to where they had parked their truck) for me to bring up with a bad back. We had other examples like this, about a dozen in all. As things turned up we found things like the bottom of a pedestal fan that was complete/assembled when it was packed but the top turned up later broken and concealed in formerly empty garbage cans along with shelf parts that they broke as well and hid for me to find later. A thermostat controlled window fan that they packed was never found. Other items had been found damaged some in containers that they had not originally been packed in, furniture damaged, etc. I understand that things happen in transit but the effort to conceal damage until after they were gone is dishonest, unprofessional and disgusts me even a year later. The disrespect of leaving trash everywhere for me to clean up is insulting and intentionally hiding trunks that I took the time to pack and clearly label in the garage so that I could do what I paid them very well to do is just lazy and overshadows how hard they worked over all. It's ironic that they used the trash cans to hide the damaged property but never thought of using them for the dozens of empty and half empty bottles and cups that they left everywhere. I wrote to Schuman/North American after discovering much of this but they said they never got the email. I was not seeking compensation, just to inform them of the kind of service I received. A few months later they sent me a bill for another $36 because the actual weight was more than they had estimated. This added insult to injury but I paid it and told them what I thought of the whole thing. They said they were going to look into it but they never cashed the check and I haven't heard from them since. Needless to say they will never touch anything of mine again.
