Mr. Watson passed our project on to a former worker of his who was unemployed at that time. This fellow, Brian Kirk from Potsdam, NY, quoted us for $1300. This price seemed fair for the work I had described, but Mr. Kirk, Mr. Watson and I apparently mis-communicated because after less than 10 hours on the job Mr. Kirk packs his truck to leave with only about 70% of the job complete. We agree that there was a misunderstanding but then the bill is handed to me and I see that in the labor portion of the bill, he has charged me $600 for less than 10 hours of work. This is after being told by Mr. Kirk that he values his labor at $27/hr. (he also adds 20% to the price of materials for his time in gathering them). When questioned about this discrepancy both Mr. Kirk and Mr. Watson declared it standard service-worker practice to bill customers whatever they think they can get away with, when the customer opts to pay by the quote system. Mr. Kirk padded his quote not by an understandable few hours, but by more than 100%. I would not hire him again unless I knew exactly how long a job was going to take, got him to work by the hour, and purchased the materials myself. He also left the worksite littered with packaging and offcuts from the materials used.
