John did an excellent job. He had to carefully move the refrigerator. Than carefully cut through old damaged boards. He replaced what he cut out with new boards. He also did the same with two boards that show in a high traffic area. The replacement looks perfect to me. Most contractors would not do this small job. He also arrived on time.

I just bought a house and the hardwood floors were a mess. After Jazz Hardwood Floors was finished with them, they look amazing! The job took longer than they thought so they even came out on a Saturday morning to finish it up. They are a little more expensive than some other estimates that I got but they were able to work with my schedule. There were just two things that I was disappointed with. I don't have shoe moldings in a few of my the rooms and even though I plan on adding them eventually, they're not a top priority right now. Where I don't have the shoe moldings, there is stain all over the base boards. John gave me a few ideas on how to fix it but now that's more work for me to do. There's also stain all over the walls. I spent almost $1000 the week before to get them painted so it was frustrating to have to go through every room and touch up spots of stain on the walls. There were also a few small spots where I had to patch the wall because a piece was gouged out. But the floors do look great and I'm very happy with the finished product.

They did an incredible job, well beyond our expectations for these ultra dirty and pet-stained floors we found after ripping up carpet. People ask if the floors were just installed, they look so good! We talked to another company who wouldn't even consider the job with the floors in such bad shape, but Jazz was knowledgeable and professional. Their vacuum system was phenomenal so there was zero dust, and all the workers were very nice. We would recommend them for any project, but particularly if you have seemingly hopeless floors. They're basically miracle workers.

Response from Jazz Hardwood Floors Inc
"I find it curious that this review would show up a year after the customer and I mended our relationship. I think this may have more to do with me cancelling my paid advertising with Angie's List than a dissatisfied customer (since [Member name removed] and [Member name removed] are very satisfied and have been for over a year). I had head that Angie's List would post bad reviews if you stop spending money with them. I guess this confirms it. If anyone would like to hear the complete story regarding this rating, you can contact me directly. My information is still in my listing."

john responded promptly to my request for a estimate and also scheduled the work promptly.
john and the rest of the gentlemen that did the work were friendly and had a great sense of humour.

I was working with a tight window to get the floors done before moving in. I called John on Friday 3/1/14 for a quote and he responded promptly with a visit that evening to inspect and provide me an estimate. Jazz happened to have a cancelation for the following Monday, 3/4/14, which was perfect since I needed the floors completed by Friday 3/8/14. The quote seemed reasonable and I couldn't be happier with how quickly they would be able to begin work.
John and his team arrived on-time Monday to begin work, wrapping up at 4:30pm or so everyday, until completing the job Wednesday evening. They repaired necessary areas in the floors, as well as adding an attractive shoe molding around the floors. John provided great communication throughout the job, providing text updates, as well as to ask necessary questions so that I could provide input on decisions, such as with the repairs and moldings.

I gave Jazz an overall "B" as the job was not finished on time and they did not contact me.  The work was to be complete on 01/06 and 01/07/14.  I was OOT when the work was being done.  I returned on 01/10/14 to find the moldings had not been installed.  I had a tenant moving in the following morning.  Jazz did respond quickly and return at the end of the day to install the molding.  What I don't understand about contractors, any contractor, is why they are so bad at communicating once the job is contracted.  One simple phone call would have resulted in an "A" rating.  I do plan to use Jazz again, as they could not refinish the entry floor due to the winter temperatures.  I also will be having the upstairs floors refinished in the near future.
Response from Jazz Hardwood Floors Inc
"I had chosen to not respond to this review because there was implied promise of more work with this customer. Just to set the record straight - we worked at this house during a significant lake effect winter storm. We had to shovel our way into the house through 2' high snow drifts and shovel our way back out at the end of the day. We had to do this on both days. Here is a link to the official report on that storm. http://www.weather.gov/buf/lake1314_stormg.html There was a travel ban in effect for the city of Buffalo during this time. Part of the job was replacing some ugly old flooring (pergo, I think) that someone had put down. We installed new hardwood to match the existing floor. The original estimate did not include any trim molding in that area. I supplied it "no charge"."

they were great! Showed up when they said they would every day. Kept me informed of their schedule and what they were doing next. They did great job, even correcting some unevenness from someone else's do it yourself job. They kept everything clean with no dust anywhere. The floors look great - I've had nothing but compliments from everyone that's seen them.

The price was comparable to other estimates I received.  The job was done on time, and we were very happy with the result - the floor looks brand new.  John was great about explaining everything.  The only drawback was that he was not initially very good about returning phone calls to get the initial estimate.  I had to leave a 2nd message in order to get a response.  If it wasn;t for the good ratings I saw here on Angie's list, I would not have bothered with a second phone call, but in the end, I was glad I did.

John certainly knows his craft, and the work that _he_ does is of good quality. In addition, the use of a finishing device that immediately collects the majority of the dust is great. However, we were disappointed that he didn't come back to finish the job we had agreed. Consequently, we have to get someone else to put on finishing touches (install showmolding, fill gaps between HW and tiles floor). Also: when they tear off the covers that were tapped to the side of the staircases, they ripped off half the paint. Some of the stain used splashed on the walls, leaving a few spots we now need to repaint. Finally, we weren't able to review the stain job immediately, since the floor could be stepped on for some time, so we paid in full w/o having seen the final outcome. When we asked about the fact that some areas had the stain applied quite unevenly (leaving spots of much lighter color), it wasn't resolved (just told us that this was "probably just the way the light comes in"). To summarize: great craftsman, who also explains pros and cons very well - we may consider hiring him again, but would ensure he does the work himself, or at least supervises those who do more closely. Due to the lack of follow up, it hurts to not be able to give an A rating (responsiveness, which dragged by professionalism). The fact that the price is higher than others, however, should not deter you - his work is of great quality and worth the price.

John and his crew were able to finish ripping up the old floor, sand the gluey gunk off and refinish the hardwood underneath as well as replace the warped boards and finish nicely with trim. I would have been happy with just an adequate floor but received a beautiful hardwood floor instead - and spent much less than installing a new floor. Couldn't be more pleased!

I previously had work done by John at Jazz Hardwood floors and wrote the review previous to this one. I liked John's work so much that I had him back to lay new white oak flooring in our master bedroom and hallway on the second floor of our home. John does incredible work and the floors look amazing. I really didnt expect anything less and he did a wonderful job on our downstairs floors from the previous summer. If you want the job done and done right you would be foolish to hire anyone else.

John (the owner) from Jazz Hardwood is a complete professional from start to finish. He really sticks behind his motto "quality work isnt cheap and cheap work isnt quality". In my case iI got quality work for an extremely excellent price. The price I paid was roughly 2500$ cheaper than a bigger named hardwood flooring company. The use of dust-free sanding is well worth the price as I did not notice any extra dust after the job was done. I felt so comfortable with John that my wife and I gave him the key to our house so he could do the work while we were away on vacation. When we came home it was like a whole new house. The quality of work was fanastic and the use of the water-based sealer was great as it did not leave and horrific smell in the house that the typical oil based sealers would. Initially for the dining room we were planning on doing a dual walnut feature strip, but John thought it would look nice to use a purple heart strip in between the walnut strips and the result was gorgeous. John was not there to just do a job, he thought of ways to make the job and the result even more incredible. That personal touch is something you wont get from a large company. After each day of work John and his crew cleaned up after themselves and we never knew they were there when we came home. They were respectful and courteous of our home while they we in there. I would highly recommend them for all of your hardwood needs!

i had an exceptional experience and was very impressed. a co-worker, however, used the same company upon my recommendation and was very displeased; they refinished her dining room floor and a 2nd coat was applied before the 1st coat dried thoroughly resulting in a very noticeable discoloration/stain. they did return to fix it but little improvement was noted. the owner did my job (impeccable work) and a crew did my co-worker's job which may account for the difference in workmanship. i need to refinish 2 additional rooms in the future and will insist that the owner do the job himself.
Response from Jazz Hardwood Floors Inc
"We refinished the kitchen for a co-worker of my wife's. The owner (me) was there for a phases of the job. I was the one who left a heavy spot of finish that showed up as a darker area near the edge of the floor. I went back to scrape and hand sand the area to blend it out. I always try the least invasive or disruptive method for repairs first. It didn't work for this situation. I offered to do a resand of the area but the home owner didn't want to have her kitchen tied up any longer. We had taken 1-1/2 days to refinish her kitchen - most other companies would take 3 or 4 days before the kitchen would be usable again. She didn't want to take an extra day to have the floor looking perfect but she did ask for a discount on the price. This was after I had already extended her a discount because she was a co-worker of my wife. I wanted to fix the floor; she wanted to pay less money. We obviously had different priorities. By the way, my crew and I were on both of the above jobs. I hire and train my crew as representatives of me. They work to my standards. I only have them do work that they are as capable of doing as I am. Their skill level on the segment of the job that they do will give you the same results as me doing that segment. Not every job comes off flawlessly; mistakes will happen, there will be things beyond our control but we will make every effort to correct these things. We are very proud of our reputation as craftsmen and guard that reputation by going above and beyond the norm to please our customers."

Our experience with John and his crew was outstanding from start to finish! To begin with, when we contacted John he made an appointment with us the same night to come to the house and take a look at what we needed done. We then spent about an hour talking about different option. John, the owner, is very knowledgeable and eager to share his knowledge with the customer. This allowed us to make some well informed decisions about what we wanted to do regarding wood choice and other options. The family room was a big issue because the floor that was in there was terribly unlevel and not sturdy. At the time of making an estimate, John was very honest that while he could give us an idea of what he thought he would need to do to fix the floor, he really could not be sure until he opened it up. As it turned out, once the subfloor was removed and they could see the way the joists were installed, it became immediately obvious why the floor had so many issues. I can?t describe in words how poorly installed the joists were and John and his crew knew the just had to start from scratch and re-install all the joists. What became immediately obvious within the first 15 minutes of meeting John was that he takes tremendous pride in his work. This is his company, and he is there with his crew doing the work with his own hands. He insists, from himself and his crew, on attention to detail. The pride he takes in his work was constantly on display from the first meeting to get an estimate to the very end of the project. For me, this was the most significant feature of this company and why I would recommend them to anyone. John wants you to have a beautiful floor more than you want it. When deciding what company to use for our floor, we also had Buffalo Hardwood and MP Carol come to our house for an estimate. There was no comparison with John in terms of how knowledgeable they were, or their attention to detail. It was clear that to them, we were just another job that they could take or leave?in fact, because of the complexity of our floor issues in the family room, they really didn?t seem to enthused about the prospect of doing the job. In terms of price, there was also no comparison. The quotes we got were $2000 higher than what we ended up paying John, whose own quote was right on the money! We now have absolutely gorgeous floors in our kitchen and family room. We get many compliments. They did a magnificent job of fixing and leveling the family room floor that was such a disaster to begin with. They spent extra time with us getting the stain just right on the floor and also in matching the stain on the baseboard to some new furniture. There were numerous little ?extras? that they took care of in the course of the job without question including fixing a water leak, and installing new water lines to the dishwasher and refrigerator.
