Over a series of days, together we tackled one project after another, going through old papers, shredding duplicates or unneeded papers that no longer had any value. She helped me create a filing system, and get all of the papers into the right file and into the file cabinets. Sometimes the process would be interrupted by memories of time past. I got to share my stories as we worked. It made the process less painful than it might have been.
Then, we tackled the books. She encouraged me to give away the books that no longer held value for me. She, also, encouraged me to buy some nice, inexpensive shelving for the books I could not part with. We set up sections for different subjects and now I can easily find the books that are important to me.
I have some wonderful pottery from my mother that I could not bear to unpack from the boxes they were stored in after she died. June helped me unpack them and put them on shelves, in an aesthetic arrangement. But, first, she thought of the idea of placing some inexpensive lighting within the shelving, which really highlights these treasures for me.
After all of this work, I felt like a whole lot of things on my to-do list were finally accomplished, and I could relax and enjoy the result. Plus, I know I am not leaving a whole bunch of junk for my sons to have to go through at some future time.
