The handyman first sealed the modeling, not the floor as per his instructions. The work everywhere was sloppy and obvious. Furniture was moved--mostly he made me move it myself-but never moved back. Cans of material that were used were left everywhere. The man was unprofessional and certainly a mess. He finished a half-hour early and did not offer to do anything else. Will never use again and do not recommend.
Response from SPRUCING IT UP
"PRESUMABLY, BY "MODELING," CUSTOMER MEANS "MOLDING." OUR INSTRUCTIONS FROM CLIENT WERE: "Seal along ceiling and baseboards; radiators to fill holes. Client has silicone and gun. Install track for under sink garbage pail." IT APPEARS CLIENT WAS NOT CLEAR ABOUT WHAT SHE WANTED DONE. WE LEFT MATERIALS FOR CLIENT IN CASE SHE HAD ADDITIONAL NEED - SHE PAID FOR THEM. WE HAVE A 3-HOUR MINIMUM; THIS JOB TOOK LESS. HAD CLIENT ASKED US TO ADDITIONAL WORK, WE WOULD HAVE DONE IT. PRICE WE CHARGED WAS $150 + TAX, AS QUOTED, NOT $200."

I had a bathroom door with loose cherry veneer that prevented it from closing. Over the phone, David suggested just replacing it with an oak veneer hollow-core door and staining it cherry. The first problem was that the arrival of the workman and delivery of door were not well coordinated -- the workman had to wait, and when the door came, it had a crack and had to be returned. We rescheduled for two days later, and the door was delivered, but was not the proper size (although I had given exact dimensions), and the workman did not have a plane with him. Rescheduled again, and finally it was installed and stained. Appearance is acceptable, but not great. However, the workman was skilled, punctual, and intelligent, and a pleasure to employ. The price was very reasonable. The workman also repaired other loose veneer in the apartment, and he was resourceful and skilled.

Unorganized company. Failure to be prepared for a job.
Response from SPRUCING IT UP
"UNFORTUNATELY, WE LIVE IN AN ERA WHERE PEOPLE TOO OFTEN DENY PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND BLAME OTHERS. WE DISCUSSED THIS ISSUE WITH THE MEMBER - ON A SATURDAY. SHE DID NOT WISH TO PAY US FOR OUR TIME TO BUY THE MATERIALS AND DISTINCTLY SAID SHE WOULD PROVIDE THEM HERSELF. WHAT IS CONSISTENT IN HER COMMENTS IS THAT SHE FELT WE SHOULD NOT BE COMPENSATED FOR OUR TIME TO BUY THE MATERIALS FOR HER JOB. IN THE END, WE DID ACQUIRE THE MATERIALS, STILL FINISHED THE JOB WITHIN THE TIME ESTIMATED AND, WHEN WE FOLLOWED UP DIRECTLY AFTERWARD, THE MEMBER SAID SHE WAS PLEASED WITH THE WORK DONE."

He came up with creative ways to deal with a curved wall and a slightly uneven floor while installing the tiles. His demeanor was that of a down to business guy and kept in good touch through emails and cell phone. I have used him in the past for house cleaning and he did a great job of that as well.

Jeremiah came for an initial appointment and David (the office contact) sent me a detailed estimate. Jeremiah was very reliable and showed up when scheduled or at least called if delayed. He was very focused on the task and showed great care for getting the job done. David was also really efficient and consistent in contacting me. Both were very patient with my design plans and helpful in communicating some revisions to the plan as needed. He always left the apartment clean and was careful while working. My only surprise was that all of the wood ended up being cut to fit on site. This was pretty loud....I understand that he was able to cut every line to fit exactly.....but working on a cutting table might have been slightly more precise. Not a huge deal because it still came out great at a reasonable price.

This guy is not friendly at all. The bathtub leg has fallen off again, since he did the work. The shelves that he installed are excellent though. The plaster job was good too. I was not happy with the fact, that he tried to make me pay a different price after the work was done. There were two people doing the work and it took them about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Response from SPRUCING IT UP
"OUR WORKER FOCUSES ON DOING HIS JOB , AND IS QUIET, NOT UNFRIENDLY. WE QUOTED A 3-HOUR JOB FOR ONE PERSON, SO 2 PEOPLE FOR 1 1/2 HOURS AMOUNTS TO THE SAME THING. THE PRICE WAS $135 + TAX, JUST AS QUOTED. WHEN WE FOLLOWED UP WITH THE CLIENT AFTER THE JOB WAS DONE, SHE SAID SHE WAS PLEASED AND WOULD BE CALLING US AGAIN IN "3-4 MONTHS" TO DO ADDITIONAL WORK."

Jeremiah was an efficient and highly competent workman. He completed each job with an understanding of its priorities and effective decisions. I would highly recommend this company for its quick response to my calls and its receptive attitude about the work. The company manager came to my home to assess the jobs to be done and then scheduled an appointment .

This job was estimated on 8/16 by one person who came to my home and then said he would return to do the actual work;however, he did not return. Another man came to my home on 8/22 to do the work (he was 1 hour late). He was very pleasant but his work was just adequate and not worth $45/hour which I think is quite high for such work.
Response from SPRUCING IT UP
"THE MEMBER IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE; HOWEVER, SHE WAS TOLD AHEAD OF TIME WHAT THE PRICE WAS. SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO USE US. ALSO, IF SHE IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE WORK, WE WILL CORRECT WHAT SHE IS UNHAPPY ABOUT."

This company performed well from the first phone call to the end of the job. The phone person was friendly and efficient and to my amazement, especially for Manhattan, gave me an appointment for later that very day. Their system is efficient as well. They calculate how long your job will take and tell you in advance exactly what the job will cost. No surprises! Only $45 an hour! The handyman arrived on time. He was polite and professional and got right to work with no interruptions. The job took three hours just as I was told. He gave me a small survey to fill out after the job and I was glad to give him and the service high marks.

They worked quickly and neatly. Instead of dragging a large, rolled up rug into my buildings elevator, they quickly cut it into smaller pieces which they were easily able to take down in trash bags. They did a good job and even wiped off the furniture with a paper towel when they finished. They were very pleasant and polite. They offered to assemble a piece of furniture, something I had not asked them to do, because they had not filled the first time minimum of 3 hours. Because they did not have the appropriate tools we will set a time for them to come back.

THEY ARE AN EXCELLENT COMPANY. THEY WANT TO KNOW SPECIFICALLY WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE SO THEY CAN DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT. I WAS SHOCKED AT HOW COURTEOUS AND PROFESSIONAL THEY WERE.
