My 1960s era console piano had deep grooves in the hammers from years of playing. This made the hammers pluck the strings so the piano no longer sounded like a real piano. In addition, small pianos like a console have inharmonicity due to the shortness of the strings. So it takes a great tuner make a small piano sound it's best. Leopold Holder of New York Piano Center replaced my hammers a few years ago, and has been keeping the piano in tune ever since. It sounds better than when it was new. I play a lot of jazz, and complicated harmonies sound the way they are supposed to ever since Mr. Holder fixed my piano and has been maintaining it.

I have been in New York for about 11 years. I've used several piano tuners, and if there's one thing I've come to appreciate is that there is clear communication. Leopold is not only an extremely competent piano technician, but also, he listens. If you have any questions or inquiries about what he's doing or some other issue with your piano, he will take his time to explain it to you, and even show you a bit about how the mechanics of the instrument works. This makes the customer feel a lot safer. First, because it shows that the technician knows what he's doing. Second, because you're also learning a bit about what he's doing to your instrument, and so, you feel less in the dark. He also assisted me in buying a piano (I bought my Yamaha Upright from him, which he gave me at a reasonable price. And whenever I need to move my piano somewhere, he knows of good piano movers as well) I strongly recommend you try his services, and I wouldn't be surprised if, like myself, you end up sticking to his services for the rest of your life.
