Way over time -- scheduled for 3 months, took close to 8 months.
Issues were many. Architect was responsible for a substantial portion of the delays.
The workmen on the job were generally good natured and willing to help, but not highly skilled. Many mistakes were made and had to be redone. They were not carefully supervised by the contractors and I was not home much myself to supervise. Issues ranged from installing the wrong products to just plain sloppy work such as paint spills. Ultimately it was all cleaned up and we were happy with the result but it took a lot of badgering and complaining to get there. This accounted for a lot of the delay in the job. Seems like it would have been easier to do it right the first time but I guess that would involve hiring higher paid workers in the first place.
Summary:
Cost was good -- this was our lowest estimate -- in one case $100K less than another bid -- and no hidden fees/surprises.
Work was slow and sometimes sloppy, but ultimately got the job done well
They were very responsive to criticism and requests for change and for that I am grateful. Basically if I wasn't happy they were willing to take another crack at it. I only wish they did it right the first time more often.
