.have had a European and Asian  (GSM) for over ten years but the phone was outdated and service had deteriorated so I went on line to find a better service. Since I had a GSM phone I purchased a SIM card, for $9, which worked fine. However I am using wi-fi when I am in the UK and my old phone was hard to use. So I called them up and I purchased a GSM phone for $60, A Samsung E3210. They also have a cheaper phone and a more expensive one.
mobal has a different approach than other services. You pay on a call by call basis and the SIM card has no expiration. Once you have a phone with their SIM card in it you pay nothing until you make a call, even if it is 10 years later. I needed to call support and there was only a short wait.
They sent the phone by FedEX from the UK and I received it 2 days later.
