Hub Plumbing & Mechanical

About us

Established in 1999, Hub Plumbing & Mechanical is a locally owned and operated plumbing and heating company located in the heart of New York City's West Village. We took over the business of Philip George Plumbing after Phil sadly passed away. We still provide the type of personal service that his clientele were used to, and John Wood, the owner and his dog Chief are a fixture in the neighborhood. We offer a full range of plumbing, heating, and drain cleaning services, and John is personally available to deal with any estimates and service issues.

We now used this company for two different services and were really happy both times! The first time they came to look at our radiators, because they were not providing enough heat. We were told that they were the wrong kind (which, honestly, makes some sense because we already came to distrust the original contractor). Nonetheless, Hub Plumbing were able to make them work a lot better and our experience in a New York winter greatly improved! The second time was to cap off and remove our gas lines, because we are switching to electric cooking. John was very responsive and helpful with several complications we have in our situation. Great experience! We will certainly use them for any future plumbing needs we may have.

I have never written a review about anything before, but given how difficult it can be to find (at least it has been for me) great plumbing services in this town, and given how excellent Hub, and specifically Dominik, were, I felt the need to share. I live in an apartment in brownstone which comes with it's own set of challenges. At any rate, I had a bad, bad leak coming from my radiator and after a quick assessment it was determined it was time for a new one. Dominik and his assistant lugged a new one up my four flights with great care for the walls and surroundings, and the same taking the old one out. They were here for 6 hours because there were unexpected problems, but they fixed everything and even repaired a hole in the floor around the output pipe. I  don't think it could have been done any better. I will definitely use them again if the need arises and would not hesitate to recommend them.

These guys are awesome.   The tech arrived on time, knew exactly what to do, and had the problem identified and solved in less than 30 minutes.   They are professional, courteous, and efficient.   Couldn't ask for anything better.    I will definitely call them next time I have a plumbing problem.

I recently purchased a house. I had the seller/developer service all furnaces before purchase. This was done by HUB Plumbing in June, there tags are pasted all over the 3 furnaces saying all tested - good working order.
I had a problem with one of the furnaces a couple of weeks ago and called HUB. They said the would have someone out the following day, Thursday Jan 3rd, they gave me a 2 hour window, they said there call out charge was $49.00. They never showed up for the appointment and did not call me to cancel. I called and the said they were busy,, but they could send someone out that night, however I would have to pay the EMERGENCY call out rate. I said no and booked an appointment for the follow ing day, Friday. It was really really cold, the heating was still not working. Again, the did not show upon Friday during the 2 hour window. I called and they said their technician was taken to hospital. I asked for someone else to come and was told not until Monday.
They did show up on Monday. My 7 month pregnant wife was home alone. The guy spent less than 5 minutes lighting the pilot light and putting a guard around it. He gave my wife a bill for $400. She was somewhat intimidated and gave him a check.
I called a while later and asked what cost $400? and they would not tell me anything other that we have certain charges. I was persistent and asked how can lighting the pilot and putting  a $10 casing on it cost $400. The guy got nasty and rude. I asked for a refund of some money and was told no.
My wife wrote to both the owner and general manager to ask for help over 3 weeks ago, but they have not got back to us.
They are accredited by the BBB, so I did send in a report to the BBB. They are investigating

I originally called Philip George, a local plumber who I'd worked with many times in the past. It turns out that he has passed away and Hub has taken over his accounts, so the call went to them. The price I was given turned out to be about twice what I expected to pay, and the installation was lousy. The plumber they sent was a really nice guy, but they are overpriced and the end result was not good. I won't use them again.

The quote was a bit high, but I agreed as the work needed to be completed in a timely manner.
The biggest issue I have with HUB was their inability to negotiate pricing (I'm sure HUB remembers me). I was charged $500 for snaking of two drains which took a total of 40 minutes. I can understand if snaking is difficult, or if it's 2 hours work, but $500 for 40 minutes of work is excessive, especially because snaking a drain isn't rocket science.
I will not be using HUB again, nor recommending them to my associates (I manage buildings, and work in Real Estate). Had HUB been understanding in my concerns, I could have been a satisfied, and likely repeat, customer. In showing that all they care about is their bottom line (over customer relations), I am turned off from the company.

VERY SMOOTH!  I thought that they did an excellent job being professional.  The plumber was courteous and put on slippers when walking in my house so that the floors didn't get scuffed or dirty.  He explained the various options and how that would translate to cost.  He was very knowledgeable and extremely punctual with time.  I would use Hub Plumbing again in a heartbeat!  From start to finish, it was an easy experience and I do believe that they are worth the slightly higher price based on their attention to the smaller details.

I didn't want to get into it, so paid for the work, but without an opportunity to take other bids.  That's the part that felt like a shakedown.  Not a honorable way of doing business.
Response from Hub Plumbing & Mechanical
"I really wish that you had contacted me regarding your dissatisfaction. I would much rather have walked away from the work than earn my company a poor rating on Angie's List. Were you coerced into doing this work with us? With all due respect, regarding the other bids, how is it that we were dishonorable? Did we not correct the problem at the price we provided to you beforehand?"

I am not sure what I paid was too much or fair.  I liked the person who did the estimate because they refused to do the first toilet that I had. He seemed to be very honest and he talked to us about it. He was really great and I think he was one of the owners.  Then eventually I got another toilet and he sent somebody out whom I really didn't care for and he was not totally into it and he came back after two weeks.  I am not sure about their price because it was the first time I used a plumber.

The pumber, Robert, started by putting on booties over his shoes so that he didn't bring dirt into my apartment. I was very impressed with that and this was before I hired him! He then explained what needed to be done toinstall a new tub spout diverter. He had to add pipe to a short 1 and 1/2 incch pipe so that my tub spout diverter would work. This required him to sodder the pipe but he did it quickly and was very efficient and very neat.  He's no nonsense and to the point and didn't waste any of my time. I'd definitely want to work with him again!

Plumber arrived promptly at appointed time, and gave an estimate for kitchen drain work at $1200, figuring 5 hours of work. This seemed very high, but we were in a jam and needed the work done quickly so we agreed. He scheduled to come back the following week. One week later, he called in sick, and another plumber was sent.  This guy looked over the job and decided he couldn't do it himself, and said he'd be back the next day.  He came back with a helper, and fixed the drain.  He then looked at the toilet and as the fixture had been installed before the floor tile, we were concerned about damage to the floor when removing the old fixture.  He said he'd be careful, but when we heard banging and went to investigate, we found him pushing against our brand new tub and kicking the toilet. When we reminded him that he needed to be careful and we didn't want the tub damaged either, he said "Do you want it done, or not? and "If the tub gets damaged from this, it must be a crappy tub.". Of course we needed it done, and of course he did damage the floor (fortunately not the tub).  So much for being careful... After finding the object lodged in the toilet, he announced that it couldn't be removed (we wonder about that), and said we needed a new fixture.  He later returned with the wrong sized toilet and had to come back a third time. The toilet and install came to $800.  Eventually all work was completed, but while there, he had tried to pressure us to also replace a perfectly functioning water heater with a new one, simply because it would be out of warranty within a year.  Why would we want to do that?  He quoted us over $2 thousand for the installed water heater- also way too high-- and seemed very irritated that we would not agree to have the work done.  It was after this conversation that the floor was damaged. We would not use this company again. We called them because we needed the work done quickly, and several other plumbers we called did not call us back right away.  While the work was completed, and both our kitchen drain and new toilet work fine, we did not care for his attitude, the price, or his lack of care in completing the work.

Great! He arrived a bit early, but telephoned first to get the OK.  After checking out the problems, He explained the job in detail and gave a written quote.  I signed it and he did the job right then and there. His truck was parked around the corner and he went and got his snake machine and was very professional, tidy and quick in his work.  He was a nice, presentable-looking man whom I did not hesitate to let into my house.  By the way, his telephone gal is named Stephanie and she has a very charming voice and expeditious manner about her.  He cleaned up after his work and let my kitchen in as good condition as it was to begin with.

We found out about HUB as result of the gas company's "energy audit". The gas company told us about Hub. Hub representative came to house, assessed job to be done, did a "show & tell" in basement with detailed explanation, gave lots of information, and provided printed material that included brochures/forms. Rep answered numerous questions and explained about what to expect before and during the job (eg. required asbestos removal arranged by us, removal of oil tank arranged by Hub, 5 days total timeframe for job, 3 days timeframe without hot water, etc); then, wrote proposal. I informed that we needed time to make the decision and would be in touch. Hub representative spent about 2 hours total. While in the house, he wore "coverings" over his shoes/boots. Shortly thereafter, we made decision to commit to this job and called Hub to inform. A start date was given. We made half payment. (And, prior to starting job, we arranged and paid for a company to remove small amount of asbestos on pipes attached to basement ceiling) Hub coordinated with company that removed oil tank and began the job right on schedule. Hub provided space heaters that we used to maintain some heat in the house during the 5 days. Hub completed job on schedule. Note: When there was need to communicate before, during and after the job, there was no problem whatsoever. We either left messages at Hub's main telephone number, called a cell phone # and/or emailed - we either reached someone directly or got fast replies. Hub carefully cleaned up when job was completed. Note: a while after the oil to gas heat conversion was done, we ended up without heat and called Hub. Hub responded immediately on emergency basis, assessed, determined a small part needed to be replaced, ordered the part, and "reset" the system so we'd have heat. When small part arrived, Hub came in as soon as we notified and took care of doing the replacement.

Our toilet was not well-secured to the floor, despite being firmly bolted, and we had Hub come out to inspect the problem. We were told that it could be either the seal around the toilet or a broken flange. Our toilet drains through the floor, so either problem would eventually lead to leaking. Hub gave us a fixed price of $240 for the seal and approximated the price for the flange at between $500-600. Fortunately, the problem was the seal. As the Hub tech was moving the toilet it bumped the countertop and the tank cracked. Hub immediately replaced the entire toilet with a newer model after a quick trip to the warehouse. We didn't have to wait or schedule a new appointment. Many companies would try to repair the tank and say that it's fine, but Hub was completely professional about it. Hub is always more expensive than other, smaller plumbing operations, and their fixed pricing for jobs can be frustrating at times. But you get what you pay for. Hub's technicians are knowledgeable, professional, very clean, and they do excellent work. It's also never a problem to get in touch with Hub or a technician. We've called other plumbers, but now use Hub for all of our plumbing and HVAC needs.
