Hub Plumbing & Mechanical
About us
Established in 1999, Hub Plumbing & Mechanical is a locally owned and operated plumbing and heating company located in the heart of New York City's West Village. We took over the business of Philip George Plumbing after Phil sadly passed away. We still provide the type of personal service that his clientele were used to, and John Wood, the owner and his dog Chief are a fixture in the neighborhood. We offer a full range of plumbing, heating, and drain cleaning services, and John is personally available to deal with any estimates and service issues.

I had a problem with one of the furnaces a couple of weeks ago and called HUB. They said the would have someone out the following day, Thursday Jan 3rd, they gave me a 2 hour window, they said there call out charge was $49.00. They never showed up for the appointment and did not call me to cancel. I called and the said they were busy,, but they could send someone out that night, however I would have to pay the EMERGENCY call out rate. I said no and booked an appointment for the follow ing day, Friday. It was really really cold, the heating was still not working. Again, the did not show upon Friday during the 2 hour window. I called and they said their technician was taken to hospital. I asked for someone else to come and was told not until Monday.
They did show up on Monday. My 7 month pregnant wife was home alone. The guy spent less than 5 minutes lighting the pilot light and putting a guard around it. He gave my wife a bill for $400. She was somewhat intimidated and gave him a check.
I called a while later and asked what cost $400? and they would not tell me anything other that we have certain charges. I was persistent and asked how can lighting the pilot and putting a $10 casing on it cost $400. The guy got nasty and rude. I asked for a refund of some money and was told no.
My wife wrote to both the owner and general manager to ask for help over 3 weeks ago, but they have not got back to us.
They are accredited by the BBB, so I did send in a report to the BBB. They are investigating
The biggest issue I have with HUB was their inability to negotiate pricing (I'm sure HUB remembers me). I was charged $500 for snaking of two drains which took a total of 40 minutes. I can understand if snaking is difficult, or if it's 2 hours work, but $500 for 40 minutes of work is excessive, especially because snaking a drain isn't rocket science.
I will not be using HUB again, nor recommending them to my associates (I manage buildings, and work in Real Estate). Had HUB been understanding in my concerns, I could have been a satisfied, and likely repeat, customer. In showing that all they care about is their bottom line (over customer relations), I am turned off from the company.
"Thank you so much for your rating, Member. If we can be of any assistance, we remain at your service."
"Thank you so much for the kind words, member! As always, we are here to serve."
"I really wish that you had contacted me regarding your dissatisfaction. I would much rather have walked away from the work than earn my company a poor rating on Angie's List. Were you coerced into doing this work with us? With all due respect, regarding the other bids, how is it that we were dishonorable? Did we not correct the problem at the price we provided to you beforehand?"
"Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm thrilled to hear that you were so pleased with our service, and thank you very much for the kind report here on Angie's List. It is through reviews like yours that we gain more business; I am extremely appreciative that you took the time to do so. As always, we are available 24/7, at your service. Thank you for your business, and on behalf of everyone in my company, I look forward to serving you again in the future, for whatever needs you may have. John Wood CEO Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Inc."
