The work was good.  The problem with this contractor is that he has no concept of time.
They are consistantly late arriving to the job.  This caused chaos in scheduling my day.
I had to have him come back to fix something that broke down with the sink he installed.
After that, I was pleased with the work.  This company is one of the few that will take a small job.
I would recommend this company, but pin down the schedule and make him stick to it!
Response from DTNY HOME IMPROVEMENT LLC
"Thanks for an honest review. Customer, please accept my apoligies for timing. Your job was one that I squeezed in between other bigger scheduled jobs. When I realized that, although small, your job was too challenging for my best field carpenter, I quickly stepped in to make adjustments and finish strong. Nothing installed in your kitchen was stock material. All had to be custom made in the field. This is tuff. Also challenging for me to free up my own schedule and attend full-time, on time. I take all jobs seriously no matter how small. I am glad that I was able to provide what you and Andrew needed. Again, sincere apologies for bad timing. Cheers. David"

They were really helpful. They got back to us pretty quickly when we contacted them. They were really accommodating. It was really a great job that they did.

"Appreciate the fair report. Too many satisfied customers are not posting reports and it is important to be acknowledged for all the good work we can produce. Anything else, just shout."

His name is David Torres. I had to call him several times before he finally came through. He was late when he finally came, but his work was fine. He had a very pleasant manner. I had to track him down 2-3 times, and call him repeatedly asking him if he was coming and telling him that he made this appointment. He canceled the appointment a couple of times. When he finally came out, he did the work. I would look for somebody else in the future, because I want someone to value my time.
Response from DTNY HOME IMPROVEMENT LLC
"Apologies for keeping you waiting. On small jobs, it is highly unprofitable for me to send someone else to survey and repair work. Your repair was something i had to attend myself and I was juggling lots at the time this took place. Again, apologies for delayed response."

very professional; completed project when promised and did not charge more than his original estimate even though drywall behind wallpaper required significant repairs

David and his crew did a fabulous job. We were very impressed with his dedication and perfectionism--he several times had the crew re-do work that did not meet his standards (or sometimes re-did it himself.) Because we were keeping some of our old cabinetry, he had to strip the old cabinets and stain them in such a way that they matched the new cabinets. He and his team experimented until they had the color match exactly right--with the result that the entire kitchen looks new. From the start, he advised us on design questions, making suggestions which proved really helpful. For instance, we love the color of the kitchen, but I doubt we would have thought of it without his help. Knowing we were on a tight budget, he came up with many ingenious ways of cutting corners without compromising on quality, e.g., he found granite countertops that had been pre-cut for another job but worked perfectly for us--saving us quite a bit. The bid he gave us at the start changed only once, when he discovered the lack of drywall behind our paneling. Even then, he quoted a price and gave us the option of having him just put the paneling back up, if we didn't want to pay for the drywalling. Numerous small glitches arose, as is likely to happen in remodeling an old kitchen, but labor costs never changed. (Note total cost listed above includes all materials and appliances.)

David and his team were always friendly and helpful. Early on, they needed me to move the car out of the garage so they could move some equipment in. It turned out my car, which was parked headfirst in our narrow garage, had a dead battery. David and crew pushed my car out of the garage and gave it a jump, then one of them sat in it while it warmed up so I could get back to work (I work at home.) At another point, when we went out of town for a few days, David offered to feed of our cats--and did so conscientiously. (He loves cats--which was helpful because we have three!) The guys were all avid fishermen and several times even brought us fresh fish! They were also happy to help out with a variety of odd jobs that came up during the course of the work, for either no cost or a minimal amount.

Bottom line: It was a pleasure having David do this job for us, and we are absolutely thrilled with the results.

I found David from this website and after interviewing a bunch of contractors chose him, for the simple reason of price, accountability, responsiveness/eagerness to answer my questions during my contractor selection process and eventually providing me with his work id's and any other information in a timely manner so my coop board gets all the paperwork. He gave us an estimate of 2-3 weeks and was out by the 3rd week, completing taking everything he had brought and even leaving the extra material he had bought (which I paid for, but generally contractors take it to use it at their other jobs). One important thing, which I really appreciated was responsiveness. Working long hours at work and no one being home supervising I felt comfortable, getting real time responses back from him on any questions or details I would need, to picture messages to ask questions on a certain situation and even dealing with deliveries gone awry.... Overall a great experience and have already gave his name to two people in referrals and one of them already stopped by to look at his work.

Unbelievable. He broke seven or more tiles. I ordered more tiles and then he charged me for the "extra" work. He did not seal the room (dust from the tile cutting blanketed the entire apartment.) He left the old tiles and the broken tiles in a large, unmovable box in my closet for me to dispose of. I worked with two tilers before this one. Both of them sealed the room, got rid of the old tiles, and supplied their own tile adhesive. David Torres had me buy my own.

"Amazing! I never met the member. Glad I didnt. She called me from out-of-state and hired me over phone. She led me to believe this was a one day job and that I could tile immediately. That area was ready for tiling. I had to demo the old floor and did not take debris away, simply because she did not pay for demo and removal. When I met her son, he stated he did not have all the tiles in apt and that I should tile as much as possible and he'd finish the remaining spaces. He called me weeks later when he could not do it and i charged them $150 extra to return and finish the job. The "7" broken tiles were scrap pieces (remainders of cut tiles that could not be used. The rest of the apt was vacant and under renovation. I covered the paths on which i walked on to work and apt was swept and mopped for any dust that traveled. Cutting tiles took place in bathroom which was thoroughly cleaned before I left this job. Day 1: demo and field tiles laid Day 2: set cut tiles as much as possible Day 3: grout Weeks later: I was asked to return to set tiles (missing from beginning) and grouted that portion, since her son could not complete job as the member wanted. Her sone who was there throughout the job was happy with the work done and never asked me to modify or reset anything. This report and customer is absurd!!!! Not surprised. Some "one day" job!!!"

The end result is beautiful. The scope of David's work included porcelain tile flooring, cabinet installation, granite counter tops, and tile back splash. He kept to my requirements that the kitchen keep the original layout, as I did not have the budget to have plumbing or electrical outlets relocated. There was a glitch where the granite sub got something wrong, but it was made right. He had to use some ingenuity to fit the gas range in place because the gas pipe extended three inches from the wall. To avoid having open gaps in the back and side of the range, he had the granite wrap around the range so it slid into one nice unified counter. There was two days delay due to a problem with the plumbing sub, but he kept me informed on the situation and brought in another sub who did the job to code and on budget. I was initially hesitant about having workmen come into my apartment while I was at work, but he was trustworthy and there were no problems from any helpers or subs that he brought in. I did my own procurement, but presented the spec sheets to him for the sinks and gas range to make sure what I wanted would fit into the spaces before it was bought. This turned out to be a good thing because one vanity basin would have been too big. David does not start work until all materials and supplies are in the home owner's possession or his. That not only avoids mid-project delays, but it was also necessary to have all the fixtures there when the granite-cutting templates were made. The only down side is that all these cabinets have to go somewhere. Fortunately, my living room was large enough to accommodate them as well as have all my kitchen stuff stacked in boxes. It's disruptive but if one is going to live in a place while it is undergoing renovation it's to be expected. Overall, I was happy with the results and with the quality of the work. Even my building super offered the unsolicited opinion, "He does good work".

David is very detailed and really takes pride in his work. (you can tell he enjoys what he does) He gave me a price for the work and stuck to it, despite some unexpected setbacks along the way. The kitchen looks great and I really appreciate the hard work that David and his crew put in. I would definitely recommend David to anyone.

David called us back immediately and came over to give us an estimate. He was able to come a few days later and install the countertop and sink. He was on time and very courteous. After he left, we noticed a small drip under the sink and called him to let him know. HE CAME RIGHT BACK OVER and FIXED THE PROBLEM! I can't recommend him enough and would use his services again! Thanks David.

As mentioned by other respondents, David is an honest and personable man. For example, there was a very slight problem with the sink pipe, a month after the job completion, and David came back and straightened out the problem, for no additional cost. My neighbors are sufficiently impressed by his work to have hired him to do some renovations, and I am going to have him come back in the Spring to do some minor improvements. I would definitely say to hire David for your work. He will do the work ,in such a fashion that will allow you to leave your home and feel comfortable with David in it, with no worries about security; and with certainty that the quality will be what you want. David is particularly good about exchanging ideas about various approaches to a job, and always has ways to save you money. I definitely recommend him.

David was a pleasure to work with and cares very much about the quality of work produced. As often happens with these types of projects, there were several unanticipated issued (delayed delivery of some materials, extensive prep work required, difficult to work with tiles), but David was very flexible, patient and creative. He always had ideas for different ways to approach the work and even went so far as to drive me to Lowe's and Home Depot to pick up additional supplies. At one point, he even manufactured his own pipe as we couldn't find what we needed in the store. The work took longer than expected, but much of that was due to his attention to detail and making sure the job was done well. He even offered to come back a week later to install shelves that I ordered at the end of the project, as well as to make any fixes on any imperfections I found.

Horribly, very little was completed. I had to deal with lies, delays demands for more money, shoddy workmanship and a final meeting in which he brought his mother along.

"THIS MEMBER WAS A DIFFICULT CUSTOMER, UNSTABLE AND HAD NO CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT SHE WANTED. SHE CHANGED DESIGN LAYOUT AND MATERIALS SEVERAL TIMES THROUGH THE PROCESS. SHE HAD SPENT FIVE YEARS RENOVATING HER APARTMENT BEFORE INVITING ME TO WORK. SHE DID NOT GET FAR AND WASTED LOTS OF MONEY ON MACHINERY/TOOLS SHE COULD NOT USE AND MATERIALS SHE WOULD NEVER INSTALL. THIS WAS PRIOR TO MY INVOLVEMENT WITH HER. SHE CRIED BROKE FROM THE BEGINNING. I GAVE HER REDUCED PRICING ON A HANDFUL OF TASKS (SHE CLAIMS WAS REPAIR WORK) BECAUSE I WAS SYMPATHETIC. SHE OFTEN REMINDED ME SHE WAS A SOCIAL WORKER WHO MADE LITTLE MONEY AND OFTEN HELPED THE UNDERPRIVILEGED. SHEWAS THE CON ARTIST. SHE NEVER WANTED TO PAY FOR A FULL REMODEL OR FAIR PRICES FOR SKILLED WORK. I SHOULD HAVE CANCELED THE JOB WHEN I SAW HOW UNSTABLE AND UNFAIR SHE WAS. BUT, I LIKE CHALLENGES AND WANTED TO FINISH THE JOB STRONG. I HUNG IN THERE THROUGH LOTS OF VERBAL ABUSE AND UNFAIR CRITICISM, HOPING TO SATISFY THIS VERY UNSTABLE AND UNFAIR CUSTOMER TO NO AVAIL. LOTS MORE TO THIS STORY. CALL FOR DETAILS. MY RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT I DO AND LIKE TO FINISH ALL JOBS STRONG. OFTEN, I PERFORM EXTRA (UNFORESEEN) WORK WITHOUT CHARGING ADDITIONAL. I DO THIS TO IMPROVE OVERALL QUALITY AND TO KEEP THE CUSTOMER HAPPY....BEYOND SATISFACTION. I HAVE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT (SOME KIND OF) PEOPLE BY WORKING WITH THIS MEMBER. GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE WITH YOUR RENOVATIONS PROJECTS. I AM HAPPY THAT I NO LONGER HAVE TO DEAL WITH YOUR VERBAL ABUSE AND UNFAIR CRITICISM. YOU HAVE COST ME LOTS!!!"

Very well. David and his crew did a good job with all aspects of the project. I was happy with the process and the outcome. He threw in some minor things for free, such as cutting some tiles, plastering part of the closet, etc. He is responsive, responsible, and friendly. It was a good experience overall. It took slightly longer than I expected, but I never felt that he was ignoring the project. I would definitely hire David again.

Overall, this project went well. I now have my dream bathroom! David came immediately to look at my bathroom when I called him. He was able to work with my often busy schedule. He even drove me to home depot to pick up supplies. He provided input on the design of the bathroom and it really turned out beautifully. The project was completed in the projected time frame. And he cleaned up after himself daily. I truly appreciate this contractor because even though my space is not all that big, David treated this project as a top priority. I did not have to have my project stalled by him working on other, bigger jobs (as some of my friends have experienced). David focused on quality and it is apparent in the final product - my dream bathroom! In short, I could not be happier with the work he did on my bathroom. I will need to have my kitchen remodeled as well, as I will definitely use him for that project. I highly recommend his services.

After another contractor completely botched my kitchen renovation, I found David on Angie's List and he rescued the whole project. David had to remove, reassemble and reset the cabinets which were poorly assembled and out of alignment. He also came up with creative solutions to problems caused by uneven flooring and insufficient support for one piece of granite counter top. Finally, he turned an unnecessary coat closet into a well-organized pantry. After my horrible experience with a slipshod contractor and his incompetent workmen, it was a pleasure to work with David. He's is just as concerned with quality work as the client.

It went as smoothly as these kinds of things go. The demolition was the easiest part because it's a simple galley kitchen. There were problems with installation only because the building is 75 years old and nothing is even. However, David is meticulous and a perfectionist and nothing looks uneven at all. He did a spectacular job.
