We received a report stating that they could not pinpoint the source of the leak. Complete waste of money.
Response from American Leak Detection of NYC & Long Island

"Our Technician, Jarrod, performed a high-definition infrared camera analysis for the [member name removed] group. This is a highly efficient and accurate method used by American Leak Detection. The camera revealed multiple points of water entry into the wall through the shower tiles due to weakening grout. The invoice included a detailed report illustrating the source of the leak and the issue at hand. We regret the confusion expressed in this review and appreciate when customers bring up this type of misaligned rhetoric so issues can be resolved rather than played out on-line in the most misleading fashion imaginable. Regardless of this disingenuous review, pictures and a detailed report have been supplied to the [member name removed] Group. If businesses could upload a PDF to Angie’s List, we would post the report in its entirety. We would never charge the public for our services if no service was rendered and hope that following Angie’s List subscribers will believe our rebuttal since we have an overwhelmingly positive reputation. Timeline of events: “10/17/13, the leak technician, hereafter the "tech", arrived at customer’s address. The tech reviewed the issues at hand before proceeding to determine the cause of the water damage. Below is a summary of the tests conducted and the findings resulting from the tests: After further review of the problematic area it is determined the leak is coming from the grout in between the bathroom tiles of the bathroom stall. The tiles will need to be removed and damaged area underneath replaced then re-grouted and tiled.” The above quoted statement was supplied in writing to the [member name removed] Group upon invoice. Payment is stopped on customer’s credit card. 1/23/14 a negative review is posted on Angie’s List."

The company responded quickly to my call. Two young men appeared on the scheduled date, one in training, to assess the problem. Using a special tool, they could look into the structure and found various points where water was entering the house, explained how it was traveling through the walls, and showed us the damaged areas that needed to be closed up. My contractor, who had built much of the house, had been unable, in numerous attempts, to locate these areas. The company followed up with a report, with photos, and recommendations.
My contractor followed the report, and made numerous corrections. At present, after 2 months, we have had no more leaks. We will have to see what happens in the months to come, to see if the problem has been solved.
My only complaint with this company is the problem of communication. I carefully emphasized, when I called them, that they would be coming to my summer home in Montauk, which was a 3 hour drive from where I lived year-round in NYC and I would be driving this distance on the day of their visit, to meet them at the house. When they did not arrive on time in Montauk, I called their offices and eventually the call was returned. Apparently, the 2 service men had been delayed in traffic, and instead of calling me at Montauk,, they repeatedly attempted to call me at my NYC phone number! A silly mistake, but it did cause some aggravation.

They were good. They didn't have to actually come out but they were able to walk me through, what I needed to do over the phone. They were extremely helpful. They were very knowledgeable. The guy didn't try to say that he had to come out to give an estimate. I was able to resolve the problem based on the information that they gave me and they didn't even charge me. They were awesome.

I had a leak somewhere in the slab of my home and my plumber wanted to start digging 2 holes in each room and bypass the system in in order to see if the leak was in that specific area and if it wasnt he would go on to the next room. After doing this in my kitchen and failing to find the leak I knew there had to me a better way. I called American Leak and was told they can come the next day and find the leak no problem. I assumed I wouldnt get a price till they saw how much time was involved but that wasnt the case. I was told $375 plus $60 travel. The next morning a friendly guy was at my door exactly on time and went right to work with his and quot;ghost busterand quot; equipment. He put an x at the spot and said and quot;your leak is thereand quot;. Few hours later my plumber came dug up the x and sure enough the leak was there! Thank you for saving me the headache of having holes dug up all over my home and being honest and reasonably priced. I hope never to have a leak again but if I do, they will be my first call!

My water bill increased 8x in a year.
I have a three-family house, and did an extensive study of my water usage when I got an $1,100 bill for three months' usage of water and sewer from New York City's Department of Environmental Protection. My previous year's bill for the same period was about $300.
I called American Leak Detection on Monday, January 28 and they came in the next day. Jerrod, who is one of the co-owners of the franchise, arrived on time and presented as thoroughly professional and knowledgeable.
By isolating the water meter he was able to eliminate it as the source of the problem.
He then went into the bathrooms and kitchens for all three apartments using specialized instruments for reading the activity of water in the plumbing systems.
He discovered major, and SILENT, problems with two toilets which are the obvious causes of the problem. I have every confidence that EVERY possible source of leak was tested and that the replacement of two toilets at cost of about $300 will make the utility bill come back to earth in the next period.

Took several attempts to find the leak but finally found in the liner of pool using special equipment. Both Jarod and Travis are professional and honest--a true sign of integrity which is what is often lacking today in the business place. I highly recommend them as they will be diligent and find the problem....

I called the number I found for them on the internet. (Don't be put off by the fact that their phones are frequently tended by an answering service. It's a new business run by two talented young guys and one mother and there isn't exactly a lot of secretarial staff.) Once we agreed upon a date, they arrived on time on the dot. They are so conscientious that they put disposable booties over their shoes before entering the house, which seemed a little over the top but better than the mess some make.
They examined the water-stained walls, and went into the attic with flashlights and tools including a moisture detector and an infrared camera. They found a very small area under the roof that had elevated moisture in it, and examined the area below it. They found that water from that area would likely drip onto a metal pan and then be distributed to the walls underneath in the pattern that was evident.
Then they went up on the roof to the corresponding area. In spite of the fact that there was a hornet's nest up there, they examined the area and took photos and brought them down to me to show me the likely explanation. They recommended a particular repair to the area where the roof gable meets the siding, and also a modification to the gutters there. They emailed me a complete report, with the photos, moisture data and infrared pictures and their recommendations. I now have something specific to show to a roofer about fixing this leak. I am completely confident that I am on my way to solving this dang problem once and for all.
